Lil Formers #152: Transformers 2

So, now that the movie is out everyone has been asking when I’m going to do somethign about Transformers 2. Well, this is pretty much how I feel about it. This movie has been so universally hated, so torn apart by every critic and blog as one of the worst movies ever, I really don’t think I can add anything. In fact it’s almost become an art form of it’s own finding as reviewers find new levels of hyperbole to insult the movie.

Though I will say that the movie’s supporters generally say things like “It’s not supposed to be brilliant, just turn your brain off and have fun!”  Sorry but, “turn your brain off” and “have fun” are directly contradictory. I’m not going to give any movie a break and pretend I’m stupid because it has expensive special FX (not good, expensive).

Anyways, it’s sort of a sad statement about entertainment when this quality of movie does so well. It’s just encouraging studios to abandon plot and acting in favor of girls bending over and junk blowing up.

Heading to L.A. for Anime Expo!

animeexpo

Well, I’m headed back to Los Angeles this week for Anime Expo, July 2-5 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Officially I’ll be there with UDON, and we’re set up as part of the Crunchyroll pavillion. Just look for the big UDON logos on the table! I’ll probably more be selling books more than drawing, but I’m up for more color sketches if anyone wants some!

Oh and we’re also premiering the Darkstalkers Tribute book at the show, which I have a piece in!(see it below). I also happen to do the layout otn eh book as I do for most of UDON’s art books. Other UDON artists from the book that will be at our booth are Omar Dogan and Long Vo. Also our good friend Yasuhiro Nightow(creator of Trigun, and a nice guy!) will be at the show as a guest of honor, and he also has a piece in the Tribute book.

I hope to see a lot of you there!

Also trying something new with this Playbot shirt, calling all the way back to LF strip #3. If popular I think I’ll try my hand about more shirts like this, with a little design to them rather than just my art on shirts. Let me know what you think TF fans!

Botcon 2009 Wrap-up!

Botcon 2009 was tons of fun!

Great to meet so many fans of Lil Formers and also make some new ones! The animated prints when over very well, especially with the kids, and I did a ton of sketches over the 3 days.

I spent much of the show hanging with my fellow Canadian in the TFcon crew. Us canucks need to stick together down here in SoCal. Also got to meet several TF artists for the first time, and many of the folk over at IDW. Stan Bush & Vince Dicola sems to really enjoy my renditions of them on the Botcon signing card, and hero of my youth Weird Al came through the artists alley during setup time. Woot!

Big thanks to Pete Sinclair from Fun Publications for hooking me up with my table, thanks man!

Now some pics!

Here’s my set up at the show, along with my table-neighbor Alex Milne and booth-girl extraordinaire Michelle. Also check out the signing card I did up for the Botcon crew to sell as an exclusive (includes all the voice and musical guests)

I got a set of Copic markers for my birthday last week, so I tried my hand at my first ever color sketches! They were a big hit and most everyone wants colour now. Here are a few I remembered to take pictures of:

Lil Formers at Botcon 2009!

Just a reminder to everyone that I’ll have a table in the artists area at this years Botcon, happening next week May 28-31 in Pasadena, CA! If you’d like to come pick up some prints, get a sketch, ask me what it’s like to work in the comic book/publishing industry, or just say hi, come on by!

I’ll be doing B&W sketches, and selling prints including this epic 11×17 piece featuring pretty much the whole cast of Transformers Animated…even my fav, Steeljaw!

lfanimated_final

Other 11×17 prints for sale will include:
Lil Formers: The Movie
Lil Formers G1
Lil Formers Alphabet

I’ll also have in limited supply smaller prints of various popular strips I’ve done. If you’d like to suggest a strip I should be selling at the show, leave a comment or send me an e-mail at matt@mattmoylan.com .

And of course, Matt’s autograph is always free!

Botcon also asked me to create some artwork for the show which I’m sure most of your will be getting your hands on… but as I understand it you’ll hav eto wait for the show to see what it is.

That’s about it, hope I’ll see you all there!

TFcon Wrapup!

Hey all!

TFcon is over and it was the best year yet! Thanks to everyone who came by the table, and especially everyone who bought prints and sketches!

Some highlights:

- My GF Amy helped out selling prints on day 1 so, I had a lot more time to sketch. I did 27 total this year, and also sold a bunch of pre-made sketches. Strangely I didn’t get any requests for Megatron or Prime besides a Super-Optimus and a Nemesis Prime. Though I did do two Gnaws (don’t think I ever drew him before!), some Devastators, Bruticus, Sixshot, Robotech, The Fallen, Dinobot, Unicron and many others. Most popular was Bumblebee!

-Colin who runs the show brought G1 Bumblebee voice actor Dan Gilvezan by the booth, very nice guy!

-At least 4 different little kids who came by started laughing out loud at my Movie Megs strip. No, not because of the design joke, or even at the Stunticon with a bat… for some reason kids just think Megatron on a cell phone is hilarious. Kids are awesome.

-Spoke a bunch with Cygnie from Fansproject(makes of the City Commander kit & such). Very cool guy who let me know there are apparently many Lil Formers fans in Hong Kong!

-I sold out of the Best Primes/Best Megatrons strips almost instantly both days. Guess I should be more prepared for Botcon! Also popular was the Powered Convoy strip, and of course the 11×17 Lil Formers G1 print.

-I guess this is a low-light but, one of the fans who bought a sketch from be lost it int he dealer room at the end of day 2. He hadn’t found it when i was packing up so no idea if he did find it. If anyone who was there found a sketch of Nemesis Prime & Arcee holding hands with a big heart, let me know and I will try to help get it to it’s rightful owner!

Anyways, looking forward to next year and also to Botcon!

Matt’s a Mangaka!

 Photobucket

Well, not really…(I wouldn’t dare claim to be after my rant a couple weeks ago heh), but I have now had a story published in Japan! So I guess I’m as close as I can be! ;)

Recently UDON was invited to be part of the new Street Fighter Art Comic Anthology (ストリートファイター アート・コミック・アンソロジー), by Japanese publisher Enterbrain(best known as publishers of Japanese video game magazines such as Famitsu and Arcadia). UDON did a 20 page story in the book which also contains new material from SF manga artists Masahiko Nakahira, Masomi Kanzaki, Mami Itou, and others.

And since I did a good job on the Target-exclusive mini-comic for SFIV, the boss man let me write the UDON story! It was pretty fun, and I think it turned out pretty great even though I had a lot things to work around (Enterbrain wanted Guile included, and an SFIV character, and I had to write a story that made sense with 5 different artists). I got to work with most of the UDON crew as each chapter of the 20 page story is by a different UDON artist - Chamba, Long Vo, Joe Vriens, Omar Dogan, and Joe Ng (with inks/colours on the Ng part by Crystal Reid/Espen Grundetjern).

Above is the cover and some sample pages from the UDON story if you want to check it out (though you’ll need to know Japanese to read it heh). Hopefully UDON can put out an English edition sooner rather than later, I’m pretty proud of it!

Official Street Fighter IV comic written by Matt!

All you Street Fighter fans out there I’m sure already know that Street Fighter IV is now available in stores everywhere for Xbox 360 and Playstation3. What you may not know is, if you pick up the game at a Target store in the US, it comes with a free SFIV mini-comic written by yours truly! This the first real comic story I’ve written myself, though hopefully will be followed by many more. (I’ve actually already written another unannounced comic story which turned out even better!) So if you’d like to see what I came up with for the Street Fighter crew, and haven’t goten your copy yet, go pick up SFIV at Target ;)

PS: Big ups to Joe Vriens and Espen Grundetjern for some great art on this book, and the spiffy cover by Long Vo!

Shortpacked VS Lil Formers?

Oh man, seems my latest strip has annoyed Shortpacked! creator David Willis enough to make a strip about how much he HATES Lil Formers!

Beware Mr. Willis… a terrible vengeance will be brought on Monday… yeeeeeessss…
