DREAMSLAVES #6: Secrets of the Age of Wrath

by Matt Moylan on April 19, 2012 at 2:09 pm

Well not really secrets so much as some unpublished artwork! Artist Joe Ng was nice enough to give me some unreleased artwork from Transformers War Within: Age of Wrath #4. While there were several unreleased Dreamwave comics that were fully written or even fully pencilled, Age of Wrath #4 was one of those few that was actually fully complete right up to lettering.

All these pages are drawn by Joe, but actually half the issue was drawn by Marcelo Matere. Erik Sander did the inks, and we believe colors were by Eric Burns (both mine and Joe’s memories are a little fuzzy on this. Correct us if we’re wrong Eric!). And story is of course by Simon Furman. Simon actually sells copies of the scripts for Age of Wrath #4 & #5, and other unpublished TF comics at conventions and on ebay. Check out Simon’s blog for more info!

I plan to chat up a few more creators and see who wants to show off their stuff ;)

DREAMSLAVES #5: I need artwork, stat!

by Matt Moylan on April 14, 2012 at 1:00 pm

A trick used in making many comics is the stat panel – reusing existing art for storytelling reasons or just to save time. Sometimes a small part of the art will be altered (like the mouth) or maybe the line art will be recolored to match a new scene.

Dreamwave was especially notorious for using stat panels. I think the worst case was Pat Lee’s two issue run on Transformers Armada, especially issue #7. Almost every page of this issue has some type of stat. Here are a couple of the more blatant examples.

TRANSFOMRERS ARMADA #6 PG 22

On the left is a full page splash of Megatron with the Star Saber sword. This one image was reused at least 3 more times over the two issue run!

TRANSFOMRERS ARMADA #7 PG 22

This page barely exists without the stats..almost every panel is statted! A few are recolored and flipped.

These are just a couple examples. If you happen to own these two issues, or have the Transformers Armada Vol.2 TPB, I’m sure you can find tons more.

C2E2 is happening this weekend in Chicago, and Bandai/Namco has setup some retro arcade machines to promote the Shiftylook comics like Bravoman! Check out a pic of the Bravoman machine, complete with banner artwork by Dax Gordine (and a kid dressed as the Flash playing!):

Also check out this time-lapse video of the chalk art banner Eric Maruscak is creating of all the Shiftylook properties. Looks like Bravoman is getting a prime spot in the middle!

NEWS: Matt drew a comic!

Well, part of one! The latest Bravoman comic strip is a collaboration between me and series artist Dax Gordine. I did the Brav-mobile blueprint/sketch, while Dax did the insert panel. Click the image below for the full version, and if you are so inclined, please leave a comment on the Bravoman website!

In other news, I had a great time at the He-con/80s Toy Expo last week! Looking forward to setting up at TFcon this summer. Here’s a quick interview I did at the show with toy reviewer Vangelus:

Also, here’s me wearing the fire helmet of Mr. Optimus Prime (the person, not the truck).

DREAMSLAVES #4: Red Crosses

by Matt Moylan on April 5, 2012 at 3:41 am
Posted In: Blog

A lot of this story is common knowledge to TF fans (I even made a comic strip about it), but I’d wager plenty of people still don’t know this one.

Around the early issues of the Transformers Generation One vol.2 mini-series, something happend to Ratchet’s design, see if you can catch it in these two panels.

Transformers G1 Vol.2 #1:

Transformers G1 Vol.2 #3:

Hmm, Ratchet’s shoulder colors seem to have inverted… did the colorist make a mistake? Nope, it was very much on purpose.

At the time, Hasbro had recently been taken to court by the Red Cross for using the trademarked Red Cross emblem on the Armada Red Alert toy. So Hasbro had to make sure the red cross was removed from any toy or licensed product (like a comic) including G1 Ratchet. This is also why they changed the cross logo to some made-up gear logo for the Armada Red Alert repaint:

So, starting with TFG1 Vol.2 #2 we had to start coloring Ratchet a little differently, no big deal. When it BECAME a big deal was actually the above-shown TF G1 Vol.2 #3. During production of this issue the change was forgotten and Ratchet was colored the old way with red crosses showing. This actually happened while I was on vacation, and when I came back I saw the early print samples of the issue had just come in. After a quick review I noticed the mistake, and everybody scrambled trying to figure out what to do. I remember we tried begging Hasbro to let is slide just this once, but no go (their hands were really tied after the lawsuit). So the whole print run of the issue was pulped and reprinted. Not sure what the exact number of copies was, but it would have been at least 70,000 comics destroyed. Ouch! For comparison to these days comics, that would be the full prints runs at least 4 or 5 IDW Transformers comics.

I’ve seen the red cross pop up a couple times since then on Ratchet. There was one IDW variant cover where he had it, so I guess the Hasbro approval people aren’t as careful about it as they used to be.
