Lil Formers #126: Doozerfield

Interesting fact, the Doozer constructions were made from radishes, which is why the Fraggles ate all their buildings.

Also I have never actually seem Cloverfield but, I assume it’s something like this.

Oh! I really like the coloring you put into this one!

  2. Dr. Jones

This one is really funny! My favorite is, “It’s alive, man!” These keep getting better and better!!!

  3. Mac

Ok, please someone put an end to years of confusion…

What are they lyrics to the themetune? I’ve always sung “Catch your cares away / Worried for another day…” but that really does sound stupid and obviously wrong.

  4. Randallw

I think it’something along the lines

cast your cares away/ Worries are for another day

  5. Kay T

    Dance your cares away,
    Worries for another day.
    Let the music play,
    Down at Fraggle Rock.

Also: Matt, your interpretation of Cloverfield is perfect!

  6. Fudgecrumpet

The doozer constructions were made of radish? Are you making that up? I just assumed the fraggles were just mental and ate plastic. Actually gave in to nostalgia the other day and watched some fraggle rock, boy is it rubbish and confusing.

  7. Zesty Piquante

Actually, yes, the Doozer constructions were built entirely of sticks made from ground-up radishes. They did this because Doozers love to build, but if nothing destroyed what they built, they’d run out of room very quickly. Ergo, they make their buildings delicious, and the Fraggles happily snack on them, and the Doozers happily build something else there. It’s a snug little ecosystem :)

  8. Fudgecrumpet

Right then. Glad you could get that straight for me. I’ll say it again - Rubbish and confusing.

  9. Raymond T.

    “Kranix! Look! It’s Unicron!!!”
    Oh wait…

  10. Gastrian

    @ Raymond T.

I was thinking the exact same thing -

“Get to the ships. Its our only chance”

  11. kiselkupus

I remember despising these puppet-show things as a kid, I always considered them far less “realistic” than cartoons and “obviously fake”……..go figure :)

Fraggle Rock kinda holds a special place in this cultivated hate back then, because airing of my beloved Smurfs was canceled and Fraggles were aired instead. I ended up boycotting the time-slot I lived for each week until the TV-deity put back a “proper” show……the Snorks :)

  12. Kay T

In addition to Fudgecrumpet & Zesty Piquante, There was an episode once where one fraggle, either Mokey, Wembley or Boober presumably, decided to make a stand and prevent the fraggles from eating the dozer buildings.

The dozers got really offended, and upset due to it. I forget if they were insulted, thinking the fraggles thought their buildings tasted crap, or if they saw the fraggles eating as a form of aesthetic appreciation… but either way, it was daft.

To be honest, I’m unsure if this occurred in the origional series or in the cartoon… Due to the cultural conflict undertones, I’d assume it was the former, the cartoon was a little more vacuous.

  13. Armorock

Boy I wish I new what Doozers were.

I love the CLoverfield reference though, this is a really good one.

  14. Matt Radel

    Ha! Well done.

  15. M Talon

@Kay T: Actually, as Zesty said above, the Doozers quit building because they ran out of room. They HAVE to build, or they die. Once Mokey realized her error, the Fraggles went back to munching away on their plas…I mean radish flavored sticks.

That show (the “live action” not the cartoon) was really awesome in that they fleshed out this whole universe that the characters lived in, complete with a cyclical ecosystem. It’s a shame more kids shows don’t take that hint.

  16. Icon-UK

The episode where the Fraggles stop eating the buildings is episode 6 of season 1 - “The Preachification of Convincing John”, where Mokey is convinced that destroying the buildings is disrespectful to the Doozers hard work and recruits “Convincing John” (Jim Henson as guest voice and loving every moment) to show the Fraggles how wrong it is to eat them. It works and soon no one can even move because of all the towers and bridges that the Doozers have built taking up all the room on the Rock.

So of course, it turns out that the Doozers NEED the Fraggles to keep eating the constructions so they have more room the build new constructions. Convincing John comes back to UNconvince them, and it all ends happily with the Fraggles chowing down on Doozer constructions as before.

    Loved that show!

  17. lamartherevenger

    classic. pure classic.

  18. JoeDirt

The doozers bugged me because their mouths looked just like wiener holes… you know it’s true. make jimmy talk… you’ll see.

  19. Pomegranate-Neko

Oh my God. I love you, man. I was waiting for a Fraggle one! Fraggle Rock is the only thing I like more than the Transformers XD

    You have won the internet.

  20. Taiya001

Cloverfield was a killer movie, it made my top 10 horror/sci-fi flick list. The fact that Paramount pictures made it and TF is completely coincidental. However it makes me think {TF - CF ?} is all of this just one giant web? I like how your comics seem to make the web clearer. However, if you suffer from motion sickness CF is not the movie for you.

  21. Mac

To Kay-T (and hi to Randall, too) : Ye gads! It’s so OBVIOUS now! Thanks!

Love this cartoon btw, Matt. I’ll be ordering t-shirts with the inevitable Xmas money in the new year, btw. :)

  22. Keith Hemari

My fellow Fraggle obsessed friend and I agree: It’s perfect!

I almost died of laughter XD

  23. Sage of Grapefruit

    I don’t get it.

  24. Kay T

    @ M Talon & Icon-UK

Thanks for the clear up… Once you mentioned ‘Convincing John’ it all came back!

Man, I used to love that show… Except the Traveling Matt sections, and the bits with the giant retard royal family…

My brother and I used to just get bored with Traveling Matt… we were all like: “Get back the colorful funnies!” and the giant retard royals used to scare the crap out of us… We had a big sofa to hide behind though.

The Heap was pretty creepy too, but the Fraggles weren’t scared of it, so neither were me and bro! Or at least we never admitted it to eachother if we were!

  25. Icon-UK

The big guys in the show were the Gorgs, the last three of their kind.

And ah yes, Marjorie the Trash-Heap, and her loyal (if sarcastic) retainers Philo and Gunge. Good times! :)

The Travelling Matt sections weren’t my favourites either. Which version did you see, the Canadian/American one where Fraggle Rock is beneath the inventors shop, or the British one, where Fraggle Rock was an actual island somewhere out in the North Sea, and instead of the inventor Doc, we had the Captain, who ran the Island’s lighthouse? (Sprocket was still the same though, of course!)

  26. frogboy

Great addition! Fraggle Rock was such a thoughful, quality program and your representation does it justice! I also like that you chose Red as the Fraggle. I’m glad to see some Muppety goodness thrown into the mix here.

  27. Kay T

    Icon:

The proper British one of course… I seem to remember Fraggle rock being set under a lighthouse, accessible through a mousehole “guarded” by the ever-vigilant Sprocket…

I was unaware there were any other versions!

    Wow! So much to learn!

  28. GrimCW

    LOL
i just found a deal for seasons 2 and 3 with a buy 1 get one free not only a week or so ago so i grabbed both (with S1 neatly on my shelf already)
gotta love the old timey shows… at least they had something to do with something and where mindless stupidity as most things these days have become :/
    ah well.
love the strip, never thought thered be a fraggle joke here… heh

  29. Newsy

I was freakin’ obsessed with Fraggle Rock when I was little. Thanks for the fun nostalgia trip, Matt! :)

  30. BlueNight

You know what really blew my mind? The day I realized the new seasons of The Jetsons had the same incidental music as The Snorks.

  31. Randallw

Here in Australia we had the American version. I remember back in the late 80’s there was a clean up your litter campaign with Travelling Uncle Matt wandering Australia.

  32. Grimlock Fan

    What the heck is this?

  33. GrimCW

    @ Grimlock Fan

its a Fraggle Rock parody of the movie cloverfield.

reading the other comments would’ve given ya the obvious hint :)

  34. Endocrom

    “It’s lions man, it’s huge!”

remember when they were speculating so much and thought that they heard “lions” and assumed it was Voltron? :Þ

  35. Grimlock Fan

    @GrimCW

What the heck is a Fraggle Rock?

  36. thunderwing

thats easy! the huge orange guy is jake spider monkey from my gym partners a monkey on teletoon!

  37. Harry

HAHAHAHAHA! This is EPIC, and so are you! Congrats on being totally awesome.

  38. thunderwing

if you were talking to me thx man

  39. tfafan

    eat em all up!

  40. Terrichance

This was completely unexpected. Fraggle Rock is a big part of my childhood *parents recorded EVERY episode on VHS tape!* and I was also a fan of the Cloverfield movie of more reecent times. An excellent meshing of two wildly era-seperated shows. XD

I’m guessing that’s Red that we’re seeing. She WOULD be like that. Though I know she’s friends with Cotterpin…

  41. hellfire

is it bad if you can still remember/randomly sing the words to fraggle rock even after all these years?

  42. Shmowzow921

WHAT THE HECK IS FRAGGLE ROCK!?!?
