Lil Formers #130: Sonic Blues
All these games are just from the past year! (Except for the Black Knight which comes out early 2009)
I really wish someone at Sega would decide to make a good Sonic game. Where he just runs around fast and jumps on robots… seems simple enough. Kinda strange that the funnest version of Sonic to play thsi year (in my opinion) is in a game made by Nintendo, heh.

January 5th, 2009 at 4:02 am
I don’t know, Sonic Chronicles had its charm…
But you are right, Sega needs to get back to basics, a high-speed hedgehog racing through zones and avoiding fiendishly placed obstacles.
January 5th, 2009 at 4:03 am
I blame knuckles, It’s his fault the series went downhill. At least with Tails you could send him off running into a wall of spikes for a laugh. Knuckles just kept jumping on buttons and such to slow the poor hedgehog down. For no reason other than he was just a big pink idiot.
January 5th, 2009 at 4:03 am
That’s great. Sonic is awesome. Too bad they can’t keep his games free from gimmicks. I remember having great times with sonic 2 and 3 on my Game Gear way back when.
January 5th, 2009 at 5:20 am
That is very true. The best one in recent years was Sonic Rush on the DS. This game managed to stay true to its 16bit/8bit heritage. However, it did add YET ANOTHER pointless character, Blaze the Cat. For me, that is my main gripe. I don’t see why they have to keep adding more and more characters into the mix. Rouge the Bat almost made me physically sick the first time I saw her in SA2.
January 5th, 2009 at 5:49 am
It’s Gimmick the Hedgehog!
January 5th, 2009 at 6:28 am
yeah i remember the fun with sonic 2, i had to download if for the my wii and it is still more fun than sonic unleashed. poor sonic.
January 5th, 2009 at 7:17 am
I think this is my first post here so hello everyone! I think that it will be difficult to have the original Sonic spirit back these days, mainly because of… 3D! I mean, Sonic was good on the Genesis/Megadrive as a side scroller, with excellent graphics, high speed and that kind of game mechanics, but I don’t think it will be that good on modern 3D hardware: you have two options:
1) create a 3D environment an let sonic loose… no good, you are running fast and jumping, and you have to steer too, no, too hard, it will have to slow down
2) create a pseudo 3D side scroller game with 3D backgrounds and characters… and completely loose the appeal of old 2d “pixel crafted” graphics…
IMO

They should do what I’ve been wanting Nintendo to do for years now- Make an awesome mostly 2d game that takes the original, mixes it with modern technology and improved ideas, and makes it kick ass.
Nintendo did this with The New Super Mario Bros for the ds, and though I borrowed a ds long enough to play through the game, the game was too short to get me to hunt down a bargain on a ds…
Now, if Nintendo had taken that exact formula and given it the storage space of a wii disc, lengthened the game considerably, maybe added a few things, then I’d spend $20 on a used copy several months after the main stream release.
Sega could do that with Sonic and appeal to old school fans just fine. It doesn’t have to be 3d to be a new game, it just has to look good and be entertaining.
Also, wtf, why a werewolf, Sega?

The reason they can’t make Sonic games like the old one is because in the new systems, Sonic has to run faster. He only looked fast in the originals because of the systems they were on. The increased speed means that there has to be more level developed. We’re talking MILES and MILES of level. If the gameplay only consisted of Sonic with the original formula, the games would be intollerably short because they would only be able to fit a handful of levels onto a disc that way.
So, essentially, people should quit crying about how “bad” Sonic games are. The fact is, if the games weren’t gimmicky, or they didn’t add the platforming levels, or they didn’t do something new, the games would be way too short and people would be crying about how the games were too short rather than all of the other stuff that everyone complains about. Seriously, SEGA does it so the fans can have a prolonged gaming experience, not to make the fans miserable. People need to get over it…
January 5th, 2009 at 11:56 am
Hello! First time I’ve ever posted on one of these things, but considering the topic is Sonic I felt compelled to ask: Has everyone forgotten Sonic and the Secret Rings? Unless that’s the Nintendo game Mr. Moylan was talking about…
Sonic and the Secret Rings was about as good a throwback to the original Sonic as has been produced thus far, in my opinion — and with a lot better graphics than the original versions. All there was, was speed, speed, and more speed. The only gimmick was customizing just how fast you wanted the Blue Blur to blur.
Plus, the fangirl in me went ’squee!’ at the idea of Sonic and the Black Knight. First off, it looks a lot like Secret Rings (which is one of my favorite games, close up the list next to SA2:Battle, Ocarina of Time, and Twilight Princess). And second: Zelda crossover, anyone?
January 5th, 2009 at 11:58 am
I’ve been wanting to play sonic unleashed.
It has to be better than the secret rings…
January 5th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
@TriPredRevenge: Not really a good answer. As most people I’d rather have a short, great game than a long, terrible game. No one ever said games had to be long.
January 5th, 2009 at 1:33 pm
I think Capcom had some success with Mega Man 9 a few months back. It was exactly what I waned out of a Mega Man game. Side Scrolling 8-bit goodness (not that there was anything WRONG with the 16-bit games….but it wasn’t “right”)
Sega SHOULD do something similar with Sonic. There isn’t a lot of R&D needed, just use the tried and true formula from the 90’s and run with it.
January 5th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
Those games are making SEGA money, my kids love the hell out of them, but I couldn’t get them to play the old Sonic game for more then a few minutes back in September. So SEGA must be on to something.
January 5th, 2009 at 3:07 pm
@Matt Moylan: Not really meant to be an answer, more an explanation. Whether SEGA went and made a short game that was exclusively Sonic running, or a long game with other aspects, the players are going to complain. Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure were excellent games, but they were on the DS, not the major consoles. Fact is, they will only be able to get away with making the short games exclusively featuring that gameplay on the handheld systems, because the people aren’t really expecting an epic. When you buy a game for a console system, you don’t want to be able to finish the game in two hours. SEGA knows this and that’s why we don’t get those types of games anymore.
So, in truth, the only “good answer” would be to play the games like Sonic Advance, Sonic Rush, and Sonic Rivals because they use that gameplay. Otherwise, the “good answer” is play another series.
Seriously, though, at least SEGA keeps us full of Sonic games, unlike Nintendo with Mario. We get one platforming game, one Kart game, and one RPG style game a system featuring Mario with Nintendo, and that’s it. Otherwise, we are subjected to terrible sports games until the next system hits the shelves. GBA cheated by rereleasing old platforming games instead of releasing a new one. Fortunately, DS is going to break the norm and release as second RPG style game if only to have an even number with its platforming games because of Super Mario 64 DS. It’s honestly as though Nintendo has realized that the gaming community is going to complain about the games regardless of how good they are, so they’ve just decided to keep releasing the old ones through the handheld systems and Virtual Console, as if they were saying “fine, you don’t like our new games? Here are the old ones. We’ll keep making money, and you’ll keep buying them…”
January 5th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
i agree with TriPedRavage they’re trying to make the most out of a character and I think they’re doing a good job of trying different things.sure its not the same as the ‘original ’sonic game but times have moved on e.g 3d !!!! but i also think they took it too far with sonic unleashed and now they’re using too many characters when there’s a load they can reuse!!!!!
January 5th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssssssssssssssssssss, finally a comic about SONIC THE HEDGEHOG, yeah and I kind of like the new games because it gives sonic a chance to try to appeal to other gamers that were not into the original 2d game, also…BLAZE THE CAT ROCKS!!!
January 5th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
…………………….
January 5th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
Wasen’t there a sonic fighting game for the gameboy advance?
January 5th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
Yes, it was called SONIC BATTLE.
January 5th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
I second TriPredRavage’s opinion. Good Short games are something of the past or handheld consoles, We’re in an eveolutionary era of video games, If SEGA just made the same “this-hedgehog-does-nothing-but-run-around” thing, It’d get boring, besides, They were only TWO Games On which I accept it had it’s faults, One wasn’t even about sonic (Shadow the hedgehog) and the other was cuz IT was the begenning of third Generation games (Sonic Next gen) SEGA wans’t ready! But have you seen Sonic unleashed? It’s perfect!! It brings the motion of TRUE Speed by finally making the hedgehog go at 300 mph. Also, you forget Matt, There is a term called “New fans”, Who are actually appealed by all the things you just mentioned there….otherwise It’s a great and really funny comic! I’m holding my money for Black night which comes on spring!
January 5th, 2009 at 4:34 pm
Heh heh. Sonic in the good ol days ruled. Only a few of the new Sonic games are worth it, I think. Sonic Unleashed is really nice.
January 5th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
The only Sonic game I ever really played and liked was the original game that came free with my Sega Genesis. I’m sure the other games on the Genesis would have been fun too (’cept for the 3D one… That one made me incredibly sick), but we didn’t get them until recently and I just can’t get as interested in them as I was in the first.
January 5th, 2009 at 5:34 pm
Heh sorry guys, still don’t buy that a long crappy, game is better than a short, good game. “sure it sucks but, at least it’s long” ? Not buying it Sega.
Here’s an idea, how about a long, good game?
Sega says it’s too much work to make a long, running game? Then they’re lazy.
January 5th, 2009 at 5:48 pm
They’re not lazy, it just can’t be done. The level design would take too much data and can’t fit on the discs because the levels would be MILES long. And we’re not talking virtual miles, we’re talking actual miles to scale. That’s a LOT of data. Not to mention that running that kind of data runs the systems too hard. If they released an entire game of just that gameplay, it would fry the systems. I will take my games of platforming/exploring/sonic-running-goodness over repairing/replacing my systems anyday.
January 5th, 2009 at 6:51 pm
Sonic and the Black Knight?
January 5th, 2009 at 8:03 pm
Nah, that’s just Sega’s canned statement. Have you played GTA IV? It’s a ridiculously huge world, and you go fast through it. Lots of ways to save data, reuse model elements, load/unload the front and back ends on the fly, break it into levels, it’s not tough to conceive.
January 5th, 2009 at 8:23 pm
The issue is that games that go fast process huge amounts of data in very short incraments. In which case, a lot of XBoxes get the red ring of death simply because of games like GTA and Need for Speed and such. Processing that much data that quickly kills the systems. It is safer in general for the type of gameplay to be broken up.
January 5th, 2009 at 8:45 pm
You can’t really says RROD is caused by any particular game no matter how graphics heavy it is. RROD is the result of defective parts or poor assembly. While yes, the problem can be exacerbated by heavy duty games that use more processing power, you’d have to already have a defective system to begin with.
Either way, my Xbox is less than a week old so I hope I don’t run into this problem heh.
January 5th, 2009 at 8:49 pm
I agree with Matt, there. Lots of ways to cheat about it. Really, if something is going at 300 mph you’re not going to notice if a huge amount of the details are skimped. For those complaining, they could switch up the engine so it gets more detailed when Sonic is running slow enough to stop and smell the roses.
@TriPRedRavage, processing data nuthin’. Xboxes get the red ring of death because they were designed with poor cooling methods. Granted, doing more causes hardware to heat up and anytime you run something with moving parts (i.e. a hard drive) too hard too often, it’s gonna cause wear, but an xbox is basically a dedicated pc, and pc hardware doesn’t break from too much processing.
In fact, if a system takes a load too big for it to handle, you know what happens? Slow down. Ironic, eh?
Again, with a hyper fast game you’re not going to need every blade of grass processed as you speed along, but rather just enough to make it look like you did.
~Matt Booker
January 5th, 2009 at 8:50 pm
This is my first time posting here too, but I’ve been reading these for a while now. I love this Sonic comic, but I have a friend who’ll probably hate it because he’s a major sonic fan. Oh, and I like the best Megatron one from last week. I say RID is best!
January 5th, 2009 at 8:51 pm
are we THAT old?
January 5th, 2009 at 9:27 pm
Are you guys kidding me? My girlfriend’s father has RROD her XBox 3 times because all he plays is racing games. Games that go fast like that burn out the systems because they have to process EVERYTHING in split seconds. They have to process of every aspect of every detail of every object in fractions of seconds, and by the next fraction of a second, they have to do it again. Here’s the kicker; Microsoft has tried to remedy this issue with the new powersource and chipsets that the new XBoxes have, but there are already reports of RROD pouring in; they’ve only been out for a short period of time.
Granted faulty parts can lead to the RROD, but so does the processor. I agree that not every blade of grass needs detail, but in today’s video game market, if every detail isn’t detailed, the game gets torn apart by critics. That’s why the Wii is skimped by core gamers. While the Wii is great for kids and grandparents, the gamers’ market goes for the 360 and PS3 because the games are bigger and better looking. Heck, I’m going to be buying Sonic Unleashed for my PS3 rather than PS2 for $20 cheaper solely based on the fact that it’ll look a LITTLE bit better. And that’s how the market works these days. If it doesn’t look great, it doesn’t look good.
And switching the engine would cause just as much strain on the system as if it stayed going fast at all times. That’s one of the plus sides to the new “Hedgehog Engine” they’ve put into Sonic Unleashed. Hopefully, it’ll be used in future games to assist the processing rates.
January 5th, 2009 at 10:38 pm
I thought Riders was a pretty fun game. But seriously, Sonic and the Black Knight? It makes my brain hurt.
January 5th, 2009 at 10:59 pm
@TriPredRavage: Seriously, though, at least SEGA keeps us full of Sonic games, unlike Nintendo with Mario.
Hey, I’ll take ONE Mario Galaxy to ten “Shadow the Hedgehog” any day.
January 5th, 2009 at 11:03 pm
TriPred is right guys, Today’s gamer and game critics base games on their high graphics aspect, Why do you think games like MGS4 or Army of two are loved so much? and beside Sonic games ARE short maybe you’re just not that good at it, have you actually played Sonic riders? IT took me 30 minutes to beat it! and the funny thing is, Sonic fans usually get annoyed BECAUSE of the fact that some games are short, and thankfully with the Hedgehog engine will take care of that problem, and one more thing, Calling SEGA lazy? They may have done things that YOU as a person don’t like, but they still stand as a well known respected company, they are not lazy, they are creative! Oh and collector1? It’ll be good, trust me
January 6th, 2009 at 12:35 am
@Captain Charles; Shadow the Hedgehog was a terrible game, I’m not going to lie and say it wasn’t, but there hasn’t been a major console platforming Mario game that I’ve liked since Super Mario World. Now, that’s my personal opinion, but I gladly take Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes and anything else SEGA is willing to dish out in place of Mario 3-on-3 Hoops and Mario Power Tennis. I will gladly take my three or more Sonic games a year over the seventeen Mario Sports games we get, thank you!
January 6th, 2009 at 12:55 am
Just say NO to Sonic! He can yiff in hell.
January 6th, 2009 at 2:21 am
A lot of recent Sonic games, particularly those for consoles, have been bad, but there have also been some good ones. I’m currently enjoying Sonic Unleashed, and both Sonic Adventures were rollicking good fun in my opinion (at least on Dreamcast, I didn’t do gamecube). And Sonic still does pretty well in his portable versions, even if they are distinct Tails-less. :p Still I’m a diehard Sonic (re: Tails) fan and not gonna give up yet on him.
January 6th, 2009 at 5:25 am
Oh gods, do you have any idea what you have unleashed? (pun definitely not intended and unwelcome)
January 6th, 2009 at 3:54 pm
@1337W4221202: You really have no idea what you have done by saying that….

@TriPredRevenge: Not really a good answer. As most people I’d rather have a short, great game than a long, terrible game. No one ever said games had to be long.”
Yeah, what he said. Portal is a rediculously short game and yet it was the best of 2007.
No, Sonic has become too commercial. Nintendo seems to CARE about the quality of the games they put out - Sega just seems to do it for money.
My favorite Sega game was NiGHTS Into Dreams. LOVED IT. Sega crashed and finally made a sequal after 12 years of fans asking for another and it was horrible!!
Sonic is taking the same route! The last good one was probably SA2. Everything after that is absolutely horrible, and even the Dreamcast ones are debatable.
We will not get into Shadow the Hedgehog. That was the biggest ‘mind-rape’ Sega has ever unleashed.
So, my point is, Sonic WAS great. Now he’s horrible and Sega is just making worse with their new ideas…
AND SEGA TOTALLY RIPPED OFF TWILIGHT PRINCESS WITH UNLEASHED. That is all.
January 7th, 2009 at 9:47 am
Man, the only good Sonic games in the last ten years were the Rush games for the DS. Can we just… can we just have MORE of that, please? It’s not hard.
January 7th, 2009 at 11:26 am
Chronicles was one of the worst games I ever spent money on. It was really great up until Chapter 5 or so. I haven’t gotten past Chapter 8, and I probably never will, either. Excellent comic, though!
January 7th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
@Kyra: Nintendo doesn’t care about it’s customers anymore than SEGA does. In fact, I personally feel that Nintendo cares even less. Mario Kart Wii is a terrible, TERRIBLE game. I looks terrible. The visuals are awful and a major step backwards from the beautiful display of Double Dash. That said, it is pretty much Mario Kart DS with Wii Functionality.
All that Nintendo appeals to now is nostalgia. That’s why R.O.B. makes an appearance in everything now. Nintendo just keeps remaking the same things that they’ve made over and over again, and each time they put less and less work into it.
The length of Portal in comparison to the length of a Sonic game is a moot point. Portal is a puzzle game that presents itself as a first person shooter and challeneges the player with physics problems while a story plays in the background. Sonic is an adventure series that tells a story. They can’t tell their stories in three levels of Sonic running. The only reason it works on the DS is because it is on the DS. It takes less power, doesn’t need as much graphics, the system is made for that type of gameplay. If they went and did that on the PS3 or XBox, people would be furious that they just spent all that money on six levels. There are also all of the other reasons that I have listed above, but I don’t feel like repeating myself.
January 7th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
I haven’t played a Sonic game since… Sonic 3D, I think. Judging by what I’ve seen here, I’ll leave it at that. 1337W422102, is that really necessary? Not every animal that looks vaguely humanoid has to be associated with that, do they? I remember the old Sonic games, they were good, so don’t drag Sonic’s name through the mud 1337W422102! And I have to agree, a short good game beats a long crappy game. You can always play it again. Though a game that’s mediocre on both levels is okay.
By the way, SONIC’S EYEBROWS!?! They’re huge! He looks a little like an old man (though I guess he is in the world of gaming). Seriously though, another great comic Mr. Moylan, as usual.
January 7th, 2009 at 8:11 pm
When you in Sega and you’re thinking that you should jump on the popular themes, genres, and gameplay styles that are going to utterly ruin a popular character, go for it.
January 7th, 2009 at 10:27 pm
Funny strip… I may not completely agree with the strip, but I still found the “joke” amusing.
Hehehe! I wasn’t able to play Sonic when it first became popular, so this debate is kinda funny from my perspective… I apologize for my insensitivity!
In my stupid and uneducated opinion, it doesn’t really matter w/c “Sonic” you like, some people like WoW while some people like DoTA. Some like the basics while others like a more in depth perspective in to the character that is the “Hedgehog”.
January 8th, 2009 at 3:45 am
It was so much better when things were simpler and for the purpose of fun. These days games seem to be for bragging rights or defamation of character. I tend to stick to challenging flash games now. Does anyone remember when pong was revolutionary?
January 8th, 2009 at 3:58 pm
@Capital Chay: It’s a little thing called evolutionary technology, If you are given the chance to upgrade something, YOU TAKTE IT! When you have the chance to make somethin you think will be better, YOU DO IT!
January 8th, 2009 at 9:28 pm
@Tri Pred Ravage: I will gladly take my three or more Sonic games a year over the seventeen Mario Sports games we get, thank you!
I respectfully disagree. Nintendo has multiple teams and companies working on the sports games, whereas Sega has Sonic Team constantly cranking out three Sonic games a year, and you just can’t make consistently high quality games on that kind of schedule. Of course, the time of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, and probably Sonic Heroes, is a different story: those were awesome. All I’m saying is that they should limit things to one really, really good Sonic game every two or three years, rather than a mediocre one every six months.
January 11th, 2009 at 6:09 pm
Now, this is just me but I do agree with TriPredRavage about the game length debate. I’d rather have a long okay game, than a good game I finish in two hours. Though, personally, I enjoyed SA2. Now I haven’t played many Sonic games, I admit, but those I DID play, bad or not, I enjoyed playing the games. Though I’m not touching Sonic 06! Time travel ruins gameplay more often than not. But, I did enjoy what games I played. And, for the record, I LIKED Rouge the Bat! But, as a die-hard Nintendo fan, I LOOOOOOVED Sonic in SSBB, even though I only got to play as him on a friend’s game. Why? I haven’t gotten through the stinkin’ Great maze to unlock him yet!!!
January 12th, 2009 at 10:22 am
Kyra-I agree. I sold Sonic and the Secret Rings within one day of playing it. The controls, story, and MUSIC (NO ROCK MUSIC SHOULD BE IN ARABIA. EVER.) were all garbage.
TriPredRavage: Not true. Nintendo has put out some of the best games ever lately. Super Mario Galaxy, Super smash Bros. Brawl, Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime: Corruption, etc. Nintendo does care.
January 12th, 2009 at 5:17 pm
don’t forget ringmaster (snic ad the secret rings)
January 13th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
Super Smash Bros. Brawl is no better than Melee. It is equivalent to an expansion pack on a game we’ve been playing for years. They wasted a huge amount of space on the Wii’s hard drive with that game by giving the masterpieces, list of old games, stickers and many more features that we didn’t want, where they could have used that very same space to squeeze in at LEAST two more playable characters. There are a number of characters they didn’t even need to make if they just utilized the palette swaps like they did in the last game; we could have had Shadow, Boshi, Dry Bowser, Dark Samus, and quite a few others and they wouldn’t have even needed to make whole new characters. They could have easily cloned/modified Charizard to make Ridley, Bowser to make Bowser Jr., Ice Climbers to make Baby Bros, and a TON more, but instead we have 100+ blocks of memory wasted on a piss-poor character roster and features we didn’t need or want. Brawl is a horrible disappointment.
As I’ve said before, since Mario has entered into the 3D realm, I haven’t cared for his games. The last non-RPG, non-Kart Mario game to be released that I enjoyed was New Super Mario Bros.; before that, it was Super Mario World, which just so happened to be the first one that I owned.
The same goes for Metroid. I loved Metroid Fusion, but I threw in Metroid Prime and I was bored to tears.
I don’t know what it is about Zelda, but I can’t get into the games. I played a chunk of Wind Waker and enjoyed its quirky nature, but I just lose interest in them after a while.
Nintendo doesn’t take risks. That’s the problem; they know that people are going to buy their games regardless or what they do with them, so they don’t even try anymore. Their games are just too samey. LoZ - Zelda’s captured, Link goes and saves her is the plot across the majority of Zelda games - the events along the way may change, but the story and character arcs along the way are the same. Mario - Peach has been captured, Mario goes and saves her is again the plot across the majority of Mario games - the events along the way don’t change and the character never develops, so there isn’t even a character arc to consider. Metroid - Samus loses all of her power-ups from the previous game is the only major theme that carries in all of the games. Thankfully, there is a very interesting story and character arc, but the games are just too dull and desolate to be interesting.
Mario Kart Wii is probably the biggest resounding example of how little Nintendo cares. Double Dash was great. It was beautiful visually, it did something new with the gameplay and it was a lot of fun. Mario Kart DS was great because it gave us the game that we knew and love, made it look great for the DS graphics. Mario Kart Wii is atrocious. The graphics are awful. The gameplay is poor, levels are annoying, characters are worse. Granted, Mario Kart Wii does have a roster of character along the lines of what we should have had in SSBB, but that’s not enough to save the game. Nintendo doesn’t take risks and are living solely on nostalgia. Because people are going to keep buying their games, they don’t have to put any effort forth in doing something truly new.
January 14th, 2009 at 11:54 am
Hey Sonic Unleashed was pretty good, and the Werehog stages weren’t that bad. Though I’ll agree that in a Sonic game all you need is 7×3+1 Secret levels of just running, and just to make use of the extra space left, maybe some Knuckles action stages ala Werehog stages.
January 14th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
In addition, the Wii has THE best library I have ever seen, with games like LEGO Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Batman, and de Blob.

1/ download and install “visualboyadvance” for your PC (or equiv. emulator for your Mac, PSP, ipod etc).
2/ Download “Sonic Advance TWO” (No’s 1 and 3 are alright, but three is lovely). The little fella even has a “3, 2, 1…GO!!!” and a start of a running track starting block! Heck even the first boss is in a forced running environment!
3/ Play the game then, on your TV and link it to your hi-fi/stereo and use some “2x” filters or a higher resolution (depending on your PC) and whack it on full screen!
Voila - no need to moan about Sonic anymore!
This also applies for Megadrive/Genesis emu’s, which can enable mastersystem, gamegear and aformentioned system’s games too!

Don’t forget he is “The Chosen One” in Sonic and the Black Knight!

Don’t forget that he’s been a genie since Sonic and the Secret Rings!

@Panda Bob
It’s already in this comic, except it’s “Swordsman”, not “The Chosen One”

I really like the storybook series(secret rings + black knight) because of the gameplay, and the way they inserted characters from sonic into the game. Sonic and the secret rings was fun for a bit, but the controls were so frustrating I was tempted to throw the controller at the screen, plus there were no points to the missions you had to complete to move on like “head to head” and “rampage”. I also hated the way the multiplayer worked, the controls were sloppy and they didn’t explain them enough. Sonic and the black knight is awesome, it has a really good story and fun gameplay, and they give a reason behind the missions to move on. Plus knuckle’s armor looked kick-ass so that’s a plus for me

IM A SONIC FAN AND I FIND THIS OFFENCEIVE(TYPO)

I’m a huge Sonic fan, and while I don’t completely argree with you, I do have to admit that some of the recent games were pretty slaggin lame. For the first time I found Sonic games I refused to play- Sega Tennis, Black Knight, Secret Rings, and Chronicles. And though I’ll play Next Gen, and I really do enjoy Unleashed, the Sonic levels are a far cry from the smooth 3-d action of Battle2 or DX, being all jerky and difficult to control. Ah I remember the good ol’ days where I could play through a level at high speed and be done in two minutes with minimal casualties, but now, I get five continues because the controls are so difficult… The siplicity of the Genisis-Gamecube era really was the best.
That being said, I am still a die hard Sonic fan, and find his action in Brawl totally awesome, and if the day-time mechanics in Unleashed were tweaked to be easier to control (ie simpler, SEGA, simpler!) and chao thrown back in, it would be even more my favorite game.

IMO, the only GOOD gimmick of Sonic is a role of a Fighter (Super Smash Bros. Brawl)

Too bad Sega already made an “Action Master” equivalent for Sonic. *cough* *Sonic Labyrinth* *cough*.
Hmm…..
Death of Optimus Prime - well we had a lot of ballyhoo over the plot against Sally (and the death of Johnny Lightfoot was a sore spot for some).
Trukk not munky - Yeah, Unleashed is a good equivalent.
Hippies - Guns
Reboots - Underground / Sonic x
Pokeformers - Chao breeding.
Energon - Naugus Games
Kiss Players - Elise’s kiss scene
Bayformers - Metarex Saga?
Animated - uhh…. (Better not give them ideas.)
