Lil Formers #133: Warhammer
Yeah so, this is pretty much how every Warhammer game I’ve seen goes down… an endless argument about rules! At least they look fun to paint
In related news, for any Warhammer players out there, my younger brother is selling his Warhammer Fantasy Bretonnian army on ebay, and focusing on his 40k army. It’s really gorgeously painted (not by him actually, he bought it pre painted from someone with a LOT more time). So if you are a Warhammer player or thinking of becoming one, do me a favor and check out the link:
(PS: If the auction winner happens to be a Lil Formers reader I’ll throw in a free character commission. Bonus!)

I haven’t played warhammer before, but I hear great things about it.
The Only table-top game that I play (so far) is Classic Battletech.

Never played a game like this, but I gotta say, I’ve always pictured them going down something like this!
February 2nd, 2009 at 4:03 am
nice, love 40k, that sums up the game just great.
February 2nd, 2009 at 4:52 am
That’s why I prefer Heroclix. It’s all simple and isn’t updated all the time.
I almost want to win the auction for the commission…

Alright mate boss cartoon!!! I do play a bit of 40K myself, im an ork dude aswell so extra cred for including the ork!! I must admit though games can be a bit tedious, but the models themselves are boss and a lot of fun to create and paint. But i must add that the Black Library is amazing all the Novels are truely some of the best reads i have ever had! I think you should do a face of between iron man and a space amrine, could be interesting!!!
February 2nd, 2009 at 8:42 am
They ARE fun to paint, in fact… when I actually find the time.
February 2nd, 2009 at 8:49 am
$900… good luck!
February 2nd, 2009 at 9:05 am
And that’s why I can’t play those games. I’ll stick with Risk, thank you very much.

I’ve never played warhammer, but I have heard of its crazy rules. I do enjoy the RTS Dawn of War based on 40k.
Anyways great comic Matt. The lil’ Space Marine is hilarious
February 2nd, 2009 at 12:58 pm
I never played Warhammer rpg.
I know the RTS only.

I was really into warhammer and such back when i was ickle, and this pretty sums up the game. Genius. As for the ebay auction, good luck, but also sheesh thats a lot of money.
February 2nd, 2009 at 5:21 pm
thats pretty funny. Ive played it (but painted it a far more) but like so many games it requires that you play with people you actually LIKE.
sometimes, you end up playing with jerks. and well…thats not so fun.
February 2nd, 2009 at 6:39 pm
Man, I’d buy it to get a commish from you. If only someone would give me the money…
February 2nd, 2009 at 7:20 pm
Why is it people who have no clue about the GW hobby always feel they need to pass comment? I love your strip but I’ve been playing those games for a long time and the only people who ever argue over rules are the ones who haven’t read them properly…and morons.
February 2nd, 2009 at 7:56 pm
At least I know what the gameplay is like , I never liked playing with so many rules.
February 2nd, 2009 at 9:36 pm
The green guy looks like a cross between Ani Grimlock and the Hulk!
February 3rd, 2009 at 9:55 am
Am I the only one to see Strika and Crumplezone in these two, this week?
February 3rd, 2009 at 4:55 pm
Just to comment on what Ravenor said….I couldnt agree more
February 3rd, 2009 at 6:52 pm
Its a fun pic, and true to some extent. However I will second Ravenor on his statement.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:17 pm
Heroclix ftw!
February 3rd, 2009 at 10:55 pm
Nice pic.Don’t play W40k,but know a bit of it.And I have to agree with Tyler.
February 4th, 2009 at 12:36 am
Haha, awesome! Do more Lil Hammer stuff, maybe tau?
February 4th, 2009 at 3:22 pm
LOL! i LOVE orks.
February 4th, 2009 at 10:01 pm
gonna agree with you there Matt, these games always come down to semantics and nit-picky arguments about rules. I’ve been doing it for a few years now and that’s exactly why i don’t play games, i just like making those itty bitty badasses look cool
February 4th, 2009 at 10:01 pm
also, i’m with Dre, do more.
February 4th, 2009 at 10:59 pm
@dude - Yeah..I tried but couldnt get past the “check you rimagination at the door, and consult the book for everything you can conceivably do.” I do buy them to paint - but mostly to play DND - which is funny cause we end up just ignoring the minis and play as if it were 1969.
February 5th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
Dawn of War is awesome, but if you want to play tabletop the WARMACHINE is way more fun.
February 6th, 2009 at 2:59 am
Suppose it’d be inappropriate for me to blatantly plug my ebay auction for the ‘art of warhammer 40000′ book i’m selling, wouldn’t it?
February 6th, 2009 at 8:37 pm
orks ftw
February 8th, 2009 at 11:41 am
SOMEBODY BUY THAT WARHAMMER THINNGY
February 9th, 2009 at 5:05 am
Where are the Tau?I’m a beginner playing Tau Empire for warhammer 40k….Ultramarines are awesome
March 11th, 2009 at 11:24 am
This is why i quit playing Magic: The Gathering.
April 13th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
I used to paint them and I used to play “Epic (40k)”, but I was always miffed about:
1/ They took ages to paint.
2/ My mum used to throw them against the wall when she got angry with me (she damaged a Minotaur fig that took me a month to paint).
3/ GW stopped allowing “bitz boxes” at their shops.
4/ They stopped allowing even kitbashes featuring non-GW figures.
5/ They haven’t made a single were-wolf fig since their first generation “night stalkers” fig back in the 80’s.
6/ The prices for their figs are astronomical.
7/ They brought out “updated” rulebooks every day, it seemed.
8/ No matter how well I planned my army or tactics, all it would take was someone to go and buy the “super-duper Eldar death-o-matic floatation gun of doom” and Id be toast.
9/ I ALWAYS rolled a 6 on a “1-5 deals damage of 2 points per weapon armed, but a roll of 6 will overload the weapon generator, instantly killing the operator”. I NEVER hit my enemy. Even with vulcan cannons.
10/ one game would take ALL day.
11/ GM shops were always too far away to play.
The only way to enjoy GW stuff is to just buy some figs, enjoy painting them, ignore the corporate bs and use whatever figs (be they GW or otherwise) for your kitbashes (gundam figs make great parts for kitbashes btw) and just play the games via PC.
And pic up an old copy of the ORIGINAL warhammer/40k rulebook. It has great stuff about kitbashing and on the real original spirit of tabletop wargaming. It encourages you to kitbash and use your imagination a lot more than the present-day incarnation. Old White dwarf mags are great too.
Buy Hasbro’s Heroquest game and then look for the official expansion packs and the expanded rules and cut-out stuff from old white dwarf mags. I wish I had all that so I could play it. It was a lot faster to play than warhammer. The same goes with space hulk!
May 7th, 2009 at 10:41 pm
yeah, my buddys still somehow manage to be entertained by Yu-Gi-Oh, and have simmilar arguments about the rules in the game and junk… I don’t think I could really get into any kind of table top game… espesially something with constantly changing rules…
May 17th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
I personally perfer painting Battletech miniatures, but I might get into painting WH40K minis and be interested in it.
May 25th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
whatwhatwhatwhatwhat??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
August 5th, 2009 at 11:18 am
To be honest, it is complicated. That’s why it’s recommended for adults. Yep, overpriced. Yep, complicated. Yep, time-consuming. Yep, worth it.
October 1st, 2009 at 10:51 pm
i’m very into 40k. the models are terribly fun to paint and the game is actually alot of fun. its crazy complicated, and is very tactical. ….also odd, cause i’m the only female in my area to be into it too.
December 21st, 2009 at 9:44 am
If the game is too complicated then why not just play with then like normal miniatures?….After putting then together….with super glue…and then painting them…. completely with very high details……but not before buying them at high prices. Example. A box of 5 space marines cost $40-$50 and a Dreadnought costs $70-$80!

i play frequently and i admit it can get like this it depend who you play with. if its a good game it can be really fun
