Lil Formers #145: Wolverine

Saw this over the weekend. Figured I should support it after the film leaked in the hope of more X-men movies in the future.

Went in with very low expectations, but actually thought it was an okay film. Not as good as X2 but much better than X3. Some roughs spots like the CG claws, several plots points that happen just for the sake of getting everyone where they want them to be… and of course they crapped all over Deadpool. But otherwise it was fun, I liked most of the Weapon X-ers more than I thought I would, and the fight at the end is groovy enough if you pretend it’s not Deadpool. My date actually didn’t even notice the monster at the end was the guy with swords from the beginning (if you don’t catch Logan call him Wade there’s nothing to link them…not even the same actor) so, there ya go.

Not sure why they thought it was important to show the origin of Wolverine’s coat from the first movie though… Wolvie’s never been known for a ‘famous’ jacket.

My brother just saw the Recent X-men movie, he said it’s alright, even though I haven’t seen the movie yet.

  2. laughingwarlock

    And deadpool was my favorite…

  3. Jura

Actually, it was Reynolds in the monster Deadpool costume. At least, during the close ups. I’m sure all the fighting stuff was done with a “double.”

  4. basher789

wolverine must be confused right now

  5. manikmizfit

I was actually thinking the same thing during that scene… I mean come on… How could he possibly know that the Adamantium bullet would just erase Logan’s memory… Selected important memories for that matter…

  6. Rhuen

A few continuity errors, nothing too major when you re-watch the X-men movies, but they just left a bunch of loose ends.
1: Emma Frost could fill in some holes, heck if she collected SilverFox’s things she should have that photo of Wolverine with SilverFox
2: Not sure Sabretooth knows Wolverine’s memories are screwed up, but he could fill in a whole lot of information.
3: Magneto might be able to cure his memory problems by yanking the bullets out of his brain through his ears, eyes, nose, mouth, or other openings.
Something else I noticed, apparently he can heal the adamantium on his bones with the bones, His skull looked like it was doing that while healing, and the X-rays in *X-men* showed no signs of any holes in the adamantium skull.

  7. Rhuen

also you want the continuity memory issues, the biggest one lies with Lady Death Strike, I suspect they will decide she was the daughter Wolverine never met kinda deal, because the scene after the credits, hence after the memory wipe, shows him in Japan I think, with a barmaid (if I saw correctly) who looked alot like Lady Death Strike. But if that was *her* then he should have remembered her in X-men 2, but the healing factor makes me think they are going to twist around how characters are related thing again.
Plus if the admantium can be morphed with the healing power thing was intentional then they could use that as a means to bring Lady Death Strike back from an apparent death.

  8. NZPRIME

    awww, no rotf gimmicks?

  9. jonnald

ha lol, havent seen the movie but it sounds like they didnt think everything through :P i also said to my friend ages ago that at the end they would somehow have to erase his memory in some stupid way. also, i noticed the carppy cgi for the claws in the trailers…..so in ur cartoon, you should have like drawn on the claws in paint or something :P

  10. Super Sam

Forget about Wolverine’s jacket, I want to know where Sabertooth got his. After he gets blasted for quite a few seconds from Weapon XI’s eye beams, there is not so much as a singe mark on it. How in the…?

  11. autobotspitfire

nother great comic. The movie was not bad, I was not expeting much seeing as how I did not care for the first two(yeah I’m like the only one). I guess like the first two there was a lot of promises, deadpool, gambit, but then we get one cool scene with each and over done, goodbye, see you in monster land. Cgi was crap but if you watch the credits there was like five companies doing the cgi so some shots where good while others, such as the falling ladder with gambit at the top, just sucked. Am still not sure about sabertooth, preferred the way he looked in the first x-man movie. What I did like, as in almost crap myself was the good set up for the First Class that has been tumbling around the gears for a long time. Rock on!

  12. eternity

@Super Sam: The jacket was made from Unstable Molecules. J/K

  13. Schlecki02

    Great comic =)
What bugged me most were the hole sin his skull … I mean that won’t ever heal, and in X1 he didn’t have holes on the x-ray … let alone tha fact that the small amount of gunpowder in this adamantium bullets couldn’t be enough to pierce an adamtium skull and bla nerd-talk °_O

  14. Gastrian

Supersam, haven’t seen the movie but judging from the trailers it looks like Weapon XI is Cyclops. If it is, his eye beams are a concussive force not thermal so don’t burn and hence no singe marks.

  15. Armorock

I was just talking about this movie with a friend when I read the comic. Excellent job Matt. I haven’t actually seen the movie but I hear good reviews

  16. MrBT

You know — Just had an odd thought — Wouldn’t Magneto have detected the bullets in his brain? I mean, when Magneto tried the wishbone trick with him (X2? I don’t remember), I would have thought that at least there he would have picked up on that — THAT in itself would have been worse torture for Wolverine. Move the bullets around a bit and cause insane amounts of pain/mindbending.

  17. Raymond T.

Hey. where did my comment go to? :-(

  18. RagPen

huh….. poor DeadPool…. they really did crap all over his face… :(

  19. TheFreak

The thing about the bullets isn’t so far fetched people…I would guess that even though he heals, a bullet might get in there and damage the right/wrong neural path and he’d forget stuff…if not a lot of stuff. i mean, if a good enough blow to the head would make you and i forget half of what we know, think about a bullet bouncing through your brain??? Yeah, that might do some damage.

  20. Fago

I can’t agree more with your comments over the film. Not bad, but has those stupid spots Marvel-based films is getting used to latelly. Definitely much better than X3 or Spidey 3 (can’t get worse than those…), but no match to X1 or X2. Radio-controlled Deadpool was a joke. All “loose ends” about Wolverine past were just filled with uncreative clichès (expectedly, though). Gambit was insignificant (I liked Will.I.Am’s character better, whatever his name was).

The only thing that wasn’t covered, I guess, is how Sabretooth turns into the all-muscle-no-brains Sabretooth. He’s got brains and personality in this one. His motivation is kind of lame, however.

Anyway, I wasn’t expecting a strong plot, so, if was a satisfying movie… I only hope ROTF turns to be better. Even just a little; not necesarily a masterpiece.

  21. Fago

The thing about the bullet, TheFreak, turns farfetched when the loss of memory is anticipated. Stryker already knows Wolverine will probably not be dead but only loose his memory… regardless where in the brain the bullet finally gets. Anyway, I don’t expect much scientific research from Hollywood producers after how the last Indiana movie went…

  22. Ricco

I heard one of the secret endings at the end of the credits (there are 4 depending in what cinema you watched it) that has a guy in a black trench coat picking up Weapon XI’s head and saying “who the Hell are you supposed to be?” and we see it’s Wade Wilson, meaning Weapon XI is some sort of mutated clone of Deadpool.

  23. Fago

@Ricco: That makes him even lamer, hahaha. Do you know what the 4th scene is? We have the bar in Japan, Deadpool’s head breaking the Fourth Wall, and Wade picking up the head, so far.

  24. John

Wouldn’t the bullet have just bounced off his skull leaving him with a headache or concussion?

  25. toolshed

So many Deadpool endings… The one I saw had the blade on “Deadpool’s” arm retracting slowly, then a pan over to his half head, with the eyes opening and then his mouth slowly ripping open and he says, “Shhhhhhhhhhh…”. Great cartoon Matt! “MORE BLACK!!!”

  26. Ricco

@Fago:The fourth scene is William Stryker walking around in worn out and bloody boots as he’s being picked up by MPs for killing the General.

    Hey. where’s the Bayformers 2?
the movie has your preview and don’t fall the net.
Oh, my theses pirates, don’t make tihis thing soon…

  29. Cyberscream

lol nice one. I saw it. Very entertaining, and not too many flaws if any.

  30. SniperMan

I haven’t seen it yet. But it seems like a good movie.

  31. TriPredRavage

Personally, I thought the movie was awful. There is so much left unexplained, such as why did he start being called “Logan?” How does he get his coat back?
Also, Adamantium is unbreakable, so how are those bullets supposed to kill him? And how do they erase his memories? All that would happen is that the bullets would hit his skull and stop in his forehead. Sure it’d hurt, but that’s about the most of it.
Deadpool has been my favorite character in the Marvel Universe for years now. I was pleased with Reynolds’ performance, but that was the extent of it. He was terribly treated. It’s funny though, I actually knew that this was how DP was going to be for over a year now because a friend of mine’s dad worked on the movie, so he gave me the inside scoop ages ago, so I’ve had a long time to cope. I just feel bad for all of the other fans who found out when they saw the movie completely unprepared…

  32. Super Sam

Gastrian, Weapon XI is not Cyclops, but his eyebeams are probably borrowed from him. But still, they destroy everything they touch in the movie… except Sabertooth’s jacket.

  33. El

Now, admittedly it has been over a decade since I took any kind of science classes but when you smack two substances with the same molecular structure together, how would one piece the other? Adamantium is supposedly the ’strongest’ metal compound around so it’s obviously got woah molecular density so it’s not like the adamantium ‘bullet’ is denser or harder than Logan’s skull. *shakes head* If we beg Marvel enough, will they *please* stop retconning Wolverine’s backstory every other issue? Please?

Aside from that, this panel was epic. Nearly had me splorfling 7-up on the screen!

  34. SoundBlaster1009

well even my mum said when she rewatched x men ” how did he get his jacket back?” then i said jokingly “they’re waiting for liev schrieber(sabretooth) to grow his hair and explain loads in a sequel” Overall I thought it was a good movie .
I let myself believe that the bullets damaged his memory .oh well. On another note good comic matt i’m hoping maybe a star trek one for next week ???

  35. Starfield

I thought Wolverine lost his memories in Canada, and that is how Prof. X helped point him in the right direction for finding out his history?

  36. Rhuen

On the bullets, I assumed that the Adamantium is thin enough around the skull, as it has to fit under the skin with-out noticable difference, that with the right amount of momentum that a bullet, especially those huge ones we saw, would be able to dent them inward enough to create a breaking point, but then the bullet would be lodged in his bran.

Now Adamantium is a metal, so having these stuck in your skull, even if you could regenerate around them would create interference points in the synapses, so, so long as he got them deep enough and aimed for the right points they would screw up his memory re-call.

The claws only really look bad in one scene, the bathroom scene, other than they look alright.

the more farfetched parts would be that he could regenerate the adamantium, basically bending it back in place with the rest of his skull (look in the bullet holes as he heals, that’s what it looks like).

on the different endings, one the Military picking up Stryker should be in all of them before the credits, was on what I saw, plus I got the Japanese bar at the end of the credits.

on Sabretooth, well in X-men or X-men 2 we see a new broadcast with a person with the name Hank McCoy who looks perfectly normal, but then in X-men 3 he is in his blue form. I just assumed either at some point someone did an experiment on Sabretooth, or he did it to himself to try and become stronger, seeing as how he was robbed of getting the adamantium, or he just went all beast after finnally completly loosing it.

on Prof. X aiming him in the right direction. Magneto points out a few times that Prof. X knows more than he lets on about Wolverine and is trying to aim him to places where he can help himself get his memory back.

  37. Rhinox

Ryan Reynolds actually was playing Weapon XI as well, he confirmed that.
Initially he was to be portrayed by Scott Adkins, a stuntman. However, they decided last-minute to reshoot because they wanted to involve Deadpool in the script more. I liked the movie, including teleporty-barakapool. It’s not like he’ll be this way in the comics now too, or in any future movies he appeared in. There’s three different “secret” endings to the movie, one of which shows him grabbing his head which tells the audience to shush, and one where Wade finds his head, indicating it wasn’t him after all. The third one is a crap scene were Wolverine gets drunk.

  38. Rhinox

As for the memory thing, he’s been experimenting with regeneration in at least one of his previous weapon projects, and as he hinted during Wolverine’s conversion, he probably wiped all their minds.
Biggest plot-hole for me would be, how did Vic become blonde and retarded in X-men?

  39. Jay

I LOVED this movie. Yep, it’s true. Loved everything but the crappy CGI.
Like I said on the last strip: it’s not an adaptation, it’s a whole new continuity.

  40. Jay

Oh, forgot to mention, there are pretty good explanations for almost all the plot holes.
Xavier not noticing Wolverne? Sure, he notices him, but what does Kitty Pryde say? Professor Xavier is a jerk, he let him go his own way. Sure, the students may have told him but it’s not like you ever see any of them at the school? And Cyclops only had a description to go by, hairy with claws. Hell, may as well been Sabertooth. Plus Xavier acknowledges his existance of Wolverine & Stryker’s relationship in X2

As for Rhuen’s thing about Deathstrike…not all asians are the same person.

  41. Rhuen

what I meant Jay, is that Wolverine is in Japan after the memory wipe. As we saw no Japan scene during the first part of the movie’s flash back I can only assume that this part has some connection to Lady Death Strike, but how this can tie to X-men 2 is a bit fuzzy.

  42. Jay

Or it’s a reference to Wolverine’s famous adventures in Japan.

  43. Mark Hall

Could we get teh guys behind Crank2 to do a Deadpool movie.
    That would being the Yeahs.

  44. Rhuen

speaking of Deadpool. This movie had a few bigger flaws than adamantium bullet memory wipe or other so called biggies which can be explained away.
like not being clear on what some mutant’s powers exactly were like Deadpool, Blob, and “Sierra” or was it Zero? really I have no idea who this guy is, but Stryker keeping asian mutants around to do his bidding has a kind of weird undertone to it…
or how about the idea of Silver Fox and Emma Frost being sisters? and how did an electrokinetic/machine puppeteer end up on a team of enhanced strength and other skills assassin squad? and who was that guy? I can’t be THAT far out of the loop on Wolverine’s back story.

  45. Jay

In the case of the movie:
Wade Wilson: Not actually a mutant apparently, just a kick ass ninja.
Blob: Indestructible layer of skin and the ability to create his own gravitational field.
Agent Zero: Expert marksman skills, also might not be a mutant.
I thought most of those were pretty obvious.
Silverfox and Emma being sisters? Not much other than a plot point.
BOLT (That’s his name) being on the team? You saw how he could control the plane didn’t you? As well as the elevator, he seems pretty useful. In fact, in an age of technology he might be one of the most useful. And you’re not out of the loop on Wolverine’s origin, because he’s not part of it in the comics. Neither is Blob, or many of the other characters. It’s important to remember that this isn’t the comics.

  46. 1337W422102

    Marvel Studios or bust.
Just say ‘NO’ to Fox’s Marvel movies.

  47. TacoLove

I think Stryker meant that when Wolverines brain repaired itself after being shot, the brain tissue would grow back. But his memories wouldn’t.

  48. Rhuen

Actually Jay, what threw me off on Blob’s powers was the tatoo. How could he get a tatoo if his skin is supposed to impenetrable?
and the movie distinctly points out that the team are all mutants. Deadpool included.
I should also say, as the last thing on this comic strip, that I wasn’t whineing about any of those points, just pointing out that there were more loose ends, that were “looser” than things like the adamantium bullets or sabretooth being Wolverine’s brother.
and I never expected the movie to follow the comics, people shouldn’t really, most comics wouldn’t translate litterally well onto the big-screen.

  49. MaydayPaker

I love this comic! It’m my new desktop. LOL.

I too had a big problem with the Bullets, the Jacket, Silverfox and Emma, etc, etc.

But the thing bugging me the most right now (movie or comic) is that he doesn’t have Adamantium Teeth?

  50. Rhinox

    @MaydayPaker: HOLY MOTHER OF F–

  51. Mike

maybe it wasn’t Deadpool and the monster inheirited Wade’s motormouth thus Stryker had it sealed shut. It had Cyclops’ optic blast and he was still alive at the end of the movie.

  52. Rhuen

well Mike, the movie stated that they were taking genetic samples and trying to blend powers that would counter-each other in the same body, so it ended up with Wolverine’s healing power, Wraith’s teleportation, Cyclops’s optic blasts(controlled version) possibly Quick Silver’s speed…but that could be Dead Pool’s speed. And the one thing I really consider the big question
the arm length blades, the blades were the length of the arms, and had no joint, so how did he bend his arms if those were in there before unsheating them.

  53. tfafan

    very funny
    and stupid
    but funny none the less

  54. Depth_Charge

Isn’t the point of making a prequel to answer plot holes, not create larger ones?

  55. Phantom6

Actually Jura, All of the scenes with “Weapon XI” were Reynolds stunt guy EXCEPT that one little thing at the VERY end.

And bonus, Deadpool is getting a movie all his own staring Ryan Reynolds.

  56. Starsman

I have found a way to “fix” the creature at the end. First I ignore logan say nothing about Wade. Second: In my head I call him Omega Red.

  57. Grimlock Jr.

They did crap all over Deadpool. And that could work.

  58. Felix

I loved it. Deadpool is awesome. XD
    I got the bar scene…. :(

  59. hellfire

they crapped over the whole movie in my opinion. being a fan of all the xmen movies and of G1 and gambit (i love remee) i felt that the plot holes were awfull. i could have dumbed semi trailers in some of the plot holes.

also if he revives exactly as is and the brain is just cells that connect in certain ways to create memories then wont he push the bullet out and res with memory intact rather than mimicing a major head trauma of a normal person. i mean they proved that a tatoo lasts a few hours max with him. brain damage is only temp

  60. hellfire

also at plot hole comments in G1 they show sabretooths brain is locked to even pro X but they do mention that sabre tooth and wolverine worked together and were very close. in the last few eps of G1 xmen they slip up and say brother rather than friend so this may have led to this

  61. Ninjabot33

On the end that I saw on the DVD Deadpool’s hand goes and reaches for his head which wakes up and goes “Sssshhhh” to the viewers. So he’s immortal, he can break the forth wall and if he can talk again he’ll soon be back to the Merc with a mouth we all know and love. Plus I haven’t seen that much about D.P but I think that monster version of him (minus the sewn shut mouth) is kind of like what he looks like under his costmue. I though the film would have been perfect if he could have talked and made his trademark sarcastic comments during his and Wolverine’s fight.
