Lil Formers #155: Green ‘Pool
So Ryan Reynolds is cast as HAl Jordan int eh Green Lantern movie! No real opinion on that yet. He seemed fine as Deadpool in the Wolverine movie but before that I’d never heard of the guy. Hopfully it’ll be a good choice. Unfortunately it means he most likely won’t be in the planned Deadpool movie, so that’ll either be recast or more likely just fall apart… Oh well, I am a bigger GL fan than Deadpool anyways!
As for my expectations on the GL movie, here’s hoping they don’t screw it up. My thought is, a truly great GL movie would have to be space-based, with the whole GL corps, Guardians, Sinestro etc, which would be very expensive. I dont’ think they’re willing to spend that much money on an untested property so the best we can hope for is an okay Earth-based movie. BUT if we’re lucky it’ll make enough money that they do a bigger-budget space sequel. I think GL2 is our best hope for a really stellar Green Lantern movie.
Oh PS… have wanted to do a Deadpool strip for quite a while. I know there’re tons of ‘Pool fans out there!

Seriously, you didn’t watch Blade 3, at least? =(
July 20th, 2009 at 2:42 am
dude you should have made the text bubble yellow
July 20th, 2009 at 2:47 am
@gundamfan: Oh yeah!!!
July 20th, 2009 at 3:12 am
He was in Blade Trinity?
July 20th, 2009 at 3:39 am
He was Hannibal King in Blade Three. As far as I know before that he was mostly a comedic actor.
Deadpool never really came onto my radar over here in the UK, but since the Wolverine movie I’ve heard a lot about the character (not just how bad he was in that festering pile of inadequacy) From the sound of things giving him a green lantern ring is similar to giving a hyperactive ten year old his own tank.
July 20th, 2009 at 3:41 am
Ryan Renalds as Green Lanturn? I just don’t see, Deadpool yeah because they both like to talk alot and are utterly insane LoL. Ryan Renalds is basically a comedian, all the movies he is typically in are those buddy (anti-chick flick) you know college stoner flicks essentially.
July 20th, 2009 at 3:48 am
Sacrilege!!!!!!!! Green Lantern over Deadpool?!?!?!?!?! It’s bad enough he took Scarlet from me now he takes my dreams of a Deadpool movie! There is more fun to be had with the merc with a mouth. Internal monolouge spewing + fourth wall breaking + indiscriminate killing = 2 hours of fun. You know a green lantern movie is gonna be about responsibility and doing the right thing in the face of adversity yada yada. CRAP!!!! and you know they will probably go with Hector Hammond as the villian instead of Sinestro. argghh………
July 20th, 2009 at 3:54 am
Little bit of useless info btw. He was originally petitioning to David Goyer (writer of the trainwreck that was Blade 3) to have the role of Flash/Wally West when there were rumours that he was going to write it. For someone who supposedly doesn’t read a lot of comics he sure is pretty involved in their movie adaptations.
July 20th, 2009 at 4:23 am
I’ll have to dig around later to find the figure, but the Green Lantern movie’s been given essentially the same budget as Watchmen.
July 20th, 2009 at 4:54 am
AND - he’s got ScarJo!
July 20th, 2009 at 5:27 am
Oh my god, man, space wedgies? That’s right up ‘Pool’s alley. I love your sense of humor. XD
July 20th, 2009 at 7:15 am
What makes you think he won’t do the Deadpool movie anymore? Did you honestly think famous actors only act in one movie every two years? He does around three movies a year.
July 20th, 2009 at 7:43 am
by far the best choice for hal jordan so far. so the question I want to know is who’s sinestro?
July 20th, 2009 at 10:05 am
He’s still connected to Deadpool. In fact, he’s very vocal about the Deadpool movie, so no worries there. The biggest surprise on this for me is he was always asked about and talked about playing the Flash, which I personally thought he’d be perfect for.
Ever notice it’s the actors from the X-Men movies that defect over to the DC movies? Halle Berry - Storm and Catwoman, James Marsden - Cyclops and Lois Lane’s Boy Toy/guy/dude/thing in Superman Returns, and now Ryan Reynolds - Deadpool/Green Lantern. Coincidence? I think not…
July 20th, 2009 at 10:15 am
I agree with Rhinox and TriPRed….I think he’ll EASILY be able to do both. GL will be a bit of a big budget thing, but Deadpool is easy enough that he can do that one pretty quick i’d say. it doesn’t require a whole lot of special effect and such.
July 20th, 2009 at 10:36 am
Psh. He’s gonna to both. Unless his schedule gets really hectic, no sane man would drop one or the other role.
July 20th, 2009 at 12:00 pm
Doing both roles…he’d have to be a damned good actor to really separate his performances. I’m not really familiar with the guy, but I can imagine that it’s possible for him to star in both films, just have to make sure the studios don’t try and make him compete with himself.
July 20th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
It’s all about release dates, really. Deadpool is currently tentatively slated for sometime in 2011. If they release Green Lantern after that, it’s no problem at all. Also, even if they come out around the same time, Ryan can still do both. Remember, Robert Downey Jr. was in Iron Man AND Tropic Thunder.
Great comic, Matt! I’ve been waiting for Wade over here for a while.
July 20th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
they’re not gonna recast since reynolds is pretty much the one who suggested it and he wouldn’t give up that part up for anything.
July 20th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
lol! I actually thought of something like this when I heard he was playing him too. I think he’ll be a great Lantern. Better than other casting choices.
July 20th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
Green Lantern Movie?! SWEEEEEEEET! Here’s hoping they’ll won’t introduce ion, parallax, or the spectre. dont get me wrong, Spectre is cool, but he is an agent of god so the movie will get sued or will be too preachy
July 20th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
I find Ryan Reynolds to be an under-rated actor due to being sidelined as a comdey actor because of roles in 2 Guys a Girl and a Pizza Place as well as Van Wilder. For such a small part he did well in Blade 3 and it was a very good performance in the remake of The Amityville Horror as well as Smoking Aces.
July 20th, 2009 at 3:53 pm
I don’t really think it should be him, but for the life of me I can’t think of who else should play the part.
July 20th, 2009 at 3:58 pm
Why is it dated 2008?
July 20th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
Arg - pet peeve. Why is it that each time a prospective superhero is announced, the general consensus is the initial film will be ‘okay’, followed by a kickass sequel once the property has ‘proven itself’.
Hell - just make a kick-ass movie!
July 20th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
I already read courtesy of the Deadpool Bugle that they will push back the Deadpool movie so Ryan Reynolds can be in the Green Lantern movie.
July 20th, 2009 at 4:42 pm
When I found out that Reynolds was cast as GL, my initial thought was that he would make a fantastic Kyle Rayner. But Hall Jordan? I just think that the orignal GL is too “button-up” straight-laced for Reynolds to pull off. And this is both the Silver Age and Modern interpretations of Hal. I could be wrong, but judging from the guys repertoire of movies, I just think that cheesy one-liners isn’t his style, and the whole thing won’t feel genuine. Of course, all this conjecture hingeds on whether Hollywood will do as they always seem to, and just rewrite the whole mythos, for the worse at that. *sigh*
July 20th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
Reynolds would have made a great Flash. I’m not quite sold on him slinging the green ring.
July 20th, 2009 at 5:52 pm
Matt, you should TOTALLY do a comic on how Square Enix continues to milk Final Fantasy VII for all it’s worth…
July 20th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
Sweet! I love Deadpool. Ryan Reynolds was also in the Amityville Horror remake. But I think the first thing I noticed him was Van Wilder. But if you go here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryan_Reynolds) you can see he does a few movies a year for awhile now.
July 20th, 2009 at 8:53 pm
I don’t think Reynolds would be a bad GL, especially as Kyle, but after seeing the fake trailer I can’t imagine anyone but Nathan Fillion doing Hal.
July 20th, 2009 at 9:59 pm
I like that Deadpool (huge Deadpool over here by the way) is in the strip but… the joke was a miss, sorry man. C’mon wedgies? -sigh- its Deadpool here, you could of done a taco joke or a joke ’bout violently killing a random member of GL’s rogue’s gallery. So much rich material, oh well, you can’t win ‘em all.
July 20th, 2009 at 10:05 pm
Deadpool fan***
so much for my grammar super powers…
July 20th, 2009 at 10:14 pm
Maybe I missed it, but did anyone mention the animated movie hitting the video shelf this month?
As for the live movie, I would think the first one would take place on Earth, at least until he gets a handle on his powers. A sequel would do a bit more with space, I would think.
July 21st, 2009 at 12:09 am
last time i checked (and i could be wronge on this) reynolds singed a contract to do deadpool, i dont think he could just drop that movie for the green lantern one. but if he dose, then hollywood wont keep screwing up my favorite hero-ish person.
July 21st, 2009 at 1:03 am
And the universe did tremble in fear.
July 21st, 2009 at 3:41 am
Ryan Renolds is Van Wilder and one of the dudes in Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place??
July 21st, 2009 at 3:43 am
and yeah why is the strip dated ‘08?? YOU KNEW THIS!?
July 21st, 2009 at 3:59 am
My guess is… It could be a typo
July 21st, 2009 at 4:09 am
I like him in Two Guys and a Girl. Everything after that has been a toss up.
Green’pool would surely summon a giand Bea Aurther to whup ass.
July 21st, 2009 at 5:40 am
I think him not doing one or the other would have to do with contracts with respective companies, not scheduling. I think Bradley Cooper was a better choice for Hal though but Ryan is a good actor. I think he’ll pull it off with a good script and a good director.
July 21st, 2009 at 10:05 am
Wait, isn’t Ryan Reynolds Darth Maul. Remember, Deadpool didn’t die, there is a scene at the very end of the movie where he picks up his head and his eyes open!
July 21st, 2009 at 1:22 pm
Me not such a good follower of the DC mythos, but from what I’ve heard so far. They probably might have to rewrite Hal as a character to better find Reynolds.
July 21st, 2009 at 3:35 pm
make a bw comic please
July 21st, 2009 at 4:18 pm
i have an idea for a comic of yours, its about the fact that jolt keeps popping in all the time in the movie and i think ratchets the only one that knows him.
July 21st, 2009 at 5:26 pm
Aw man I’d rather have a Deadpool movie with Ryan Reynolds than a GL movie with Ryan Reynolds. BTW You captured Wade perfectly in this strip but Honestly now that we know there are more colors than just green and yellow, Would Wade have a green ring?
July 21st, 2009 at 8:40 pm
Matt,
Awesome Deadpool pic~!!!
I’m a huge Deadpool fan and that made my day.
As for Ryan Reynolds…
He is King~!!!
Hannibal King = This role just screamed, “I am Deadpool”.
Wade Wilson = YEEEEAAAAAH BOYYYYY~!!!
Deadpool = My inner fanboy screams with impatience.
Green Lantern = His pull with the comic geeks will be unlimited.
Scarlett Johansson = It’s good to be the King.
July 22nd, 2009 at 12:02 am
This is epic but if Wade did get a GL ring, the Universe is COMPLETELY and UTTERLY screwed
July 23rd, 2009 at 12:05 am
I think the DP movie is being pushed back, but Ryan Reynolds was a horrible choice for Hal Jordan.
Ryan Reynolds actually has a personality.
July 23rd, 2009 at 1:34 am
Monty Python actually echoes my own thoughts. Hal Jordan always seemed like this dull guy, this clean cut kinda guy. While both Ryan Renalds and Deadpool, well the only difference is violance LoL.
July 23rd, 2009 at 1:35 pm
For the Ghost of John Byrne!!!!
July 23rd, 2009 at 1:35 pm
Someone saw GL: First Flight?
July 24th, 2009 at 8:35 am
Yeah, I’ve also noticed that several 2009 comics have a 2008 date on them.
???
July 24th, 2009 at 10:57 pm
Oh, my god, I can just see the fan fics now…
July 26th, 2009 at 8:37 am
Trust him 2 save us
July 27th, 2009 at 5:57 pm
He’s already confirmed personally that he is playing Deadpool in his own title movie.
July 28th, 2009 at 9:24 am
Wait… does this mean Green ‘Pool is completely powerless against his own narrative text boxes and speech bubbles?
August 18th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
@Panda Bob
Ryan Renolds is not Darth Maul, That’s Ray Park. He was also Toad in X-Men and is now Snake Eyes in G.I. Joe. Saw him in Blade, he was decent. Haven’t seen him in Wolverine to judge that performance though. He’d probably make a better Flash than Hal though.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:10 am
u should do a comic where deadpool from the comics meets the origins version
November 20th, 2009 at 8:22 am
BEWARE RYAN RENOLDS LIGHT!!!
i hope GL is the original story with the form of the yellow lantern. it was the best story of all time imo. though whats his name the black green lantern from justice league was cool also
November 20th, 2009 at 8:23 am
also regardless of what ppl say all think in my mind there is only 2 ring colors and only 1 has the supreme blessing of the guardians
November 24th, 2009 at 4:09 am
Ryan Reynolds is awesome and is a passionate comic fan. He will be in the Deadpool spin-off and in the Green Lantern film. He is very talented and dedicated. I have high hopes for both projects. Anything has to be better than the Wolverine Origins film, what a disaster.
December 20th, 2009 at 9:43 pm
Personally, I think that the first GL movie is set on Earth. The second will probably parallel the Sinestro corps war. The third will be about Blackest Night; I can’t imagine anyone with the rights to a GL movie passing on the chance to use any superhero from DC and not get sued.
January 3rd, 2010 at 6:03 pm
A crazy guy with katanas, guns, and granads is unfair as it is but giving him a green lantern ring is just bull
January 20th, 2010 at 12:56 am
OMG! thats awsome news! I think hes great for GL; hes funny, cool, and not to mention hed fit in that costume pretty well….ANYways-I hope he will be cast for that role.
March 16th, 2010 at 1:29 pm
okay. whoever asked if Ryan Reynolds was Darth Maul ought to be smacked. Of course he wasn’t, that was Ray Park. Duh.
Ryan Reynolds did some stupid comedy movies (Van Wilder, Waiting, etc.) and then did a decent job in Blade, did a great job in Amityville Horror, and did what he could with a poorly-written Deadpool in Wolverine. He’s a very underrated actor; people are always surprised when he does a good job in something.
May 2nd, 2010 at 8:09 am
If they keep any semblance of the 2008 draft script that made its way to the internet, the movie will be enjoyable, although with some differences from GL canon. That is to be expected, and most of them kind of make sense.
@comicfan — The 2008 draft script that I mentioned is the one that, in my opinion, makes the most sense to go with - at least with regards to the villain line-up. That script has the development of a fairly bastard-ish Hector Hammond, and the character Legion from the Emerald Dawn origin storyline. Sinestro is included as another GL, though not a main villain.
Also, according to the Wiki entry on Legion, he is still set to appear in the GL film, although it’s unsourced, so there’s a good chance they might be going off of the same script I read - which there may or may not have been revisions to.
All of that being said, I would LOVE to think that Blackest Night (or a version of it) is only three movies away. Unless they changed the script to accommodate the Green Lantern: Secret Origin story arc, which retcons Legion out of existence, I doubt it, though.
