Lil Formers #165: Rockformers
Is this possibly the first He-man/Gobots crossover? With characters that many people probably don’t know are from either series heh…
For those under 20, Rocklords were a spinof of the Gobots who transformed into rocks. around the same time Masters of the Universe also aded two new warriors - Rokkon and Stonedar, rock people who could disguise themselves as boulders.
If I had to pick, I’d go with the Rock people…cuz I never owned any Rock Lords sorry.

Thats really funny! I actually had a rock lord, it was a gold nugget that had these two red eyes, its was ..kinda boring after about ten min and you really couldnt play with it and your transformers cus it would be. “wow, a rock. lets throw him at the decepticons!” LOL good comic!
September 29th, 2009 at 11:22 pm
I own the action figure to the guy on the left, but I totally forgot his name! What’s he called?
September 30th, 2009 at 12:49 am
Oh my various gods, I actually remember those, what’s better is I have a funny adecdote about them. I was a very little kid when those were out, I had run away from home *in the same sense that a dog runs away from home, so more like escaped the fence and wandered off*
a cop found me, and I declared to him I was a rock lord, and precided to roll up into a ball on the ground
LoL, think dead weight passive resitance to being dragged into the car and taken back home (i think I must have been obediant enough to tell them where I lived but still was a pain in the ass LoL).
September 30th, 2009 at 1:58 am
METAPOD used HARDEN!
Foe METAPOD used HARDEN!
September 30th, 2009 at 10:41 am
I actually prefer the Granites from Inhumanoids.
September 30th, 2009 at 2:21 pm
rock lords and he-man rock people!? couldnt you lot think of anything better in the 80s? well apart from transformers and tmnt…but still…as matt portrayed them. they just sat there. verey pitiful indeed.
September 30th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
Well I would have to say the Rock Lords. Because I actually had the guy on the right. I say that because I recognize the blue-grey on beige colouring lol.
September 30th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
Oh. My. God.
I remember these.
And this also makes Sari’s fight against the Rock Monster even funnier. I KNOW that just HAD to be a shout out.
September 30th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
It was stupid, but I still loved Nugget. The robot that transformed into a gold… nugget.
Boy oh boy was it shiny!
September 30th, 2009 at 3:20 pm
Uhm… What’s the use of Changing into a Rock? Disguise? I mean, after that happens… nothing else happens… so is the comic. I don’t know these two characters, but I’m sure that the ceo’s of the toy companies must have had their thoughts and moments of silence after they’ve heard this idea as well.
September 30th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
Heehee! And thanks vp21ct, I missed the ref! =)
September 30th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
“Uhm… What’s the use of Changing into a Rock?”
Apparently you’ve never stood under one falling from 200 feet. Also, the Rock Lords’ home planet, Quartex(?), was a big rockscape, and the Comet Warriors could travel through space like..um..comets. If the Comet Warriors have an edge, it’s that the Comet Warrior’s pets, the Meteorbs, could also transform, while the Rock Lords’ “Narlies” were just animal things.
September 30th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
@ShadowWing Tronix:
Maybe so, but it’s still lame.
September 30th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
@ boredombot.. you’re an idiot
@ jonnywarlock …I had the big magma inhumanoid that was lava and rock, with the green eyes..could be the same guy…
@ matt Awesome job man! I had the rock people from he-man as well, and I thought it was a good idea!
September 30th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
Hey, Matt, this may seem to be totally out of left field, but have you ever seen the DC Animated Universe? I think it’s one of the best versions of the DC Universe.
September 30th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
Rocklords, OMG! I had the guy on the right, I really LOVED it!
Does someone remember that other “rock-shaped” franchise of toys, they were ball shaped and opened revealing a warrior, the external sphere was hard, while the warrior was “soft” allowing the transformation…
September 30th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
Ah yes… The Rock-Lords… A low point… Even for the Challenge of the Go-bots… :p
September 30th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
Let’s face it, this took pet rocks to a whole lower level.
September 30th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
AWESOME! The Rock People rule! I found a rock lord on the street as a kid, I kept him but he was nowhere near as cool as Rokkon or Stonedar. love the strip!!
September 30th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
Man I remember Rocklords, they always reminded me of that rant that Tom Hank’s character gives in the movie Big about the robot that turned into a skyscraper. “You can’t play with that, that’s not fun.”
September 30th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
Heh–I had ‘Nugget’ from the Rock Lords line as well. Shiny!
I even had the (mis)fortune to actually *see* the Rock Lords movie years ago (though the best part of it was finding out that the Rock Lord’s primary torture device is the ‘Tumbler’, which apparently causes the sentient transforming rocks to be broken down into non-living pebbles…) IIRC, they were still self-mobile even while in rock mode–and they were capable of throwing *themselves* at targets.
September 30th, 2009 at 5:14 pm
I have the guy on the left.
September 30th, 2009 at 5:14 pm
I actually had the guy on the right, his name was Boulder i think (very original name)
Rock Lords, the sad adopted stepchild of the Go-Bots
(who just happen to be the sad adopted stepchild of the Transformers…)
September 30th, 2009 at 5:16 pm
That’s remind Pokemon, in the episode where Metapod pokevolve to Butterfree XD
But, I preffer Shadow Riders.
September 30th, 2009 at 5:16 pm
I’m 20 years old and I never heard of Rock Lords (until now).
September 30th, 2009 at 5:16 pm
wow another win. i had the blue one, a robot that transformed into a rock, epic win. this figure was so epic i total forgot it ever existed. thank you for the fun time memories of playing with my transforming rock. rock on!
September 30th, 2009 at 5:17 pm
Since you decided to do a strip on a spin off series (or I guess in this case two), you should do a strip on the Battle Beasts, who were “spun off” from the Transformers.
September 30th, 2009 at 5:18 pm
@80s Dude:
Here you go, instant service -

September 30th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
I actually own the action figure to the guy on the left, but I don’t know what his name is!
September 30th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
I had never heard of them until I learned of the Gobots. (The Cy-Kill comic for this very site!) Clearly SOMEONE had nothing but rocks in his/her head when the idea was launched. especially with the character Stick ‘n’ Stones.
September 30th, 2009 at 5:20 pm
only thing that would have made this more funnier is if
1) you had a bubble “now what!” ( like i finding nemo’s ending) XD
or
2) either a tumbleweed or bumblebee *insect* asking it XD
September 30th, 2009 at 5:20 pm
I don’t remember the rock people, did the toys transform or were they just like most he-man figures?
I had Nugget, the silver bad guy and the green bad guy
…and a fuzzy grey pig-thing. yep
September 30th, 2009 at 5:20 pm
Also, the comic reminds me of a radio show called Yam-boy. His only power was turning into an inanimate Sweet potato.
September 30th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
Too bad the scissors-bot and paper-con never made it to production…
September 30th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
I could see the usefulness of turning into a rock, but….a rock? there are better things, really.
Oh and I’ve never heard of the rock people OR the rock lords (until I read this strip) , so i can’t vote.
the guy on the left seems to have the better mold design, though.
September 30th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
Haven’t seen a battle this epic since I battled a Metapod and a Kakuna using the only move in my arsenal, HARDEN. Hellz yeah!
September 30th, 2009 at 5:49 pm
hellz yea, I remember fights like that. Even better is when they finally run out of moves and are reduced to the basic move, and it does absolutoly no dammage.
October 1st, 2009 at 2:40 pm
@smiley. im not an idiot. im 13. so i guess i find most of the stuff in the 80s to be a bit rubbish so
October 1st, 2009 at 4:43 pm
My friend spent a great deal of time and money completing his rocklord collection, and he is still missing 2 parts of the gestalt, although he has all the vehicals, creatures, Gnarlies, rocklords and jewel lords
October 1st, 2009 at 8:48 pm
LOL… reminds of the pokemon battle between a couple of metapods.
This one made me snort..it was so funny.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:10 am
Christ, I love all things 80’s, but Rock Lords is one creation I’d rather see banished to moons of Mongo. Whoever came up with that idea must have been smoking lawn grass or something. I mean come on, they’re FRICKIN’ ROCKS! Couldn’t they at least transform into cow dung for some added amusement?
October 2nd, 2009 at 11:28 pm
@ GLITCHER
they did that DUNG transformation >>> see DRAGONBALL EVOLUTION
XD
October 4th, 2009 at 10:21 pm
Really, the make transformable ROCKS?? WTF?
October 5th, 2009 at 1:57 am
Wow, totally can’t believe I ever wanted Rock Lord figures as a kid. I think I might just have to take myself outside and beat me up.
October 5th, 2009 at 12:56 pm

October 10th, 2009 at 2:22 am
hahahaha. I love the blue rock. he looks like he is frowning in his rock form
October 10th, 2009 at 7:37 pm
The green rock looks like Cosmos kinda.
October 14th, 2009 at 5:17 pm
not really
October 14th, 2009 at 5:17 pm
get some one to throw yourselves
October 14th, 2009 at 9:03 pm
ahahahaha i love it! thats good rocks in disguise lol!
October 16th, 2009 at 11:26 pm
just a stupid idea…. but still throwing it out there….
Kirby: hiii guyys!
rocks:NO!
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:15 am
This sort of reminds me of the time when 2 Metapods battle each other and used only harden.
November 21st, 2009 at 1:12 am
I prefer the Machine Men versions. The Masters figures are such ’shell-formers’… (-8}
December 1st, 2009 at 7:01 pm
I had Rokkon (the Comet Person on the left), but yeah, the transformation’s basically raise arms, raise legs, flip down head; the result being a guy in a rock suit doing crunches. When a Rock Lord transforms, at least he actually looks like a rock. Those, I still have ten of (yes, including Boulder and Nuggit), in with my box of Gobots.
January 25th, 2010 at 6:33 pm
Dude, I still have a Rocklord action figure somewhere.
April 11th, 2010 at 10:44 am
I thought Metapod Vs. Metapod was a disaster, but this?
