Lil Formers #166: Stargate Universe
So, I put up my initial thoughts on the Stargate Universe premiere in this Octoblog post: Stargate Universe (I’m doing a daily blog throughout October and possibly beyond, so come back & check the main page for updates!)
After having a few days to think I about it I’ve decided ont he main reason that SGU’s first episode left me not so blown away. It’s basically that the threats on the previous series SG1 and Atlantis, and the scope of the universe have escalated so far that nothing seems impressing anymore. SG1 took us to dangerous new planets, neat! Atlantis took us to another galaxy with the possibility of no return, wow! Universe takes us to a farther away galaxy with the possibility of no return…mm, allrighty.
I’m also wondering who the villains will be on this series. SG1 had the Goa’uld and the Ori trying to enslave everyone. Atlantis had the Wraith trying to EAT everyone…will be tough for Universe to top that with something scarier. There’s not really any sense of danger at all on the series so far. Sure they’re on a decrepit ship with no air, billions of light years from home. Whatever, they’ll fix it & get back. Even the cast don’t seem too worried about it, heh.
I guess we’ll see next episode.

that Movie brings back memories.

Even though I don’t like stargate i like the comic strips especially the deadpool one. U should get ur own iTunes app
October 5th, 2009 at 2:53 am
At first I didn’t get why you said Last Starfighter….till I realized… Oh yeah…that movie about the video game nerd who suddenly gets pulled into the universe he was playing. *lol* Nice call on that one.
I was dissapointed that Daniel was shown only on an “Intro to the world of Stargate” vid….

I thought I was the only person to remember The Last Starfighter. Good god I loved that film, still do. As for stargate I’m not a massive fan, but I do like it. Though Universe sounds too much like Voyager with all the bad bits of the new Galactica.

Ah, “The Last Starfighter”, always a favourite, and so far the only 1980’s sci-movie to be turned into a stage musical. And no, I’m not kidding! http://www.amazon.com/Last-Starfighter-Various-Artists/dp/B000BTEPRY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1254734501&sr=1-2

… didn’t even say ‘Indeed’ *sulk*
October 5th, 2009 at 10:55 am
Love it, hahaha.
My dad and I have been comparing STU to ST: Voyager since we heard about it.
btw, Sci Fi should make Cooking with Teal’C a real show
October 5th, 2009 at 11:38 am
Indeed.
October 5th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
yeah the premier left me un-impressed, is the threat going to be that ship timer? afraid to get stranded on a planet?
in which case throw “Sliders” into the mix.
what’s also sad is this series will likely be the one that finnally introduces the Furlings.
October 5th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
I LUUV DEADPOOL!!!!
October 5th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
I… don’t get it.
October 5th, 2009 at 5:14 pm
And what’s with this comments about Deadpool? He’s in comic #155, not this one. Pay some freaking attention, people.
October 5th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
For stargate universe they are not going to have one specific “bad guy”, they are going to have multiple small evils….
October 5th, 2009 at 11:28 pm
the premier left me un-impressed. the sex sense didn’t need to be there, that was pointless. Rush seems like an ass but i love the accent.
I’m holding out for a few more episodes to determine if this is a worthy replacement to SG1 and Atlantis..if not i will be pissed they canned Atlantis for this show
October 6th, 2009 at 6:34 am
How could you left out the obvious Sliders reference? That is what SG:U seems like to me, Stargate: Sliders….
October 6th, 2009 at 9:25 am
Aside from the last starfighter which I am not familiar with, im a fan of ST:voyager and SG, battlestar galactica I only know of it, so I really loved this strip, you forgot to add that the ship has been implied to have its own sentience so, maybe a transformers reference?…or Andromeda Acendant. I remeber that I read about the SG creators not wanting to use the same threat and just one enemy technique so, quite possibly the timer on the gate will be their gratest threat.
October 6th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
is there a new stargate series? coolio
October 6th, 2009 at 4:53 pm
Regarding the sex scene, it certainly wasn’t any more shocking than the full frontal nude scene by Sha’re in the SG-1 pilot episode Children of the Gods.
Not defending SGU, BTW. I thought that it was indeed blatantly and shamlessly ripping off a number of science fiction series.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:25 pm
I was thinking along the same lines the whole time I watched it. But I will give it a chance and see where it goes
October 6th, 2009 at 5:49 pm
Haha- adorable comic!
I couldn’t put my finger on why SG:U didn’t seem all that impressive, but you may have hit on it- it affects only a limited group of people, not the earth or the galaxy… and most of the people it’s affecting, IMO, are annoying. Hopefully the group will shut up and find some interesting stuff that’ll make the show worthwhile for a bit.
I don’t remember any nudity in SG-1 though… not that I want to see it. It was probably edited out by now.
October 6th, 2009 at 7:32 pm
What about the original 1994 film? How come you didn’t mention that?
October 6th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
Odd I just noticed that of the original cast Teal’s did not have any cameos on the SG:Universe Pilot, so THAT must be your reason for a cooking show right?….at least you did not “Martha-Stewart”ed too much…I wonder if teal’c gota kmart line would it sell?…I certantly would if it has a lot of goa’uld style to it…IMAGINE THE BEDSPREADS!!!
October 6th, 2009 at 11:22 pm
Your also forgetting ‘LOST’ a show about a sentient island that a group of people are randomly trapped on with no forseeable way of escaping with their lives in the hands of a self proclaimed genius
they later attempted a space version of it about a group of astronauts who are exploring the solar system on a sentient ship but it didnt last beyond its third episode
Yeah, this is like a lame attempt at a reality show version of stargate
October 6th, 2009 at 11:31 pm
I was comparing Stargate Universe to Voyager/BSG/Sliders/Farscape. Can’t forget the Farscape.
October 7th, 2009 at 12:47 am
Listen closely, because I’m only going to say this once, on this comment, and nowhere else on the ‘Net.
I am sick and tired of humans unsealing evil in a can and having to defeat it. By killing Ra, we changed the balance of power among the System Lords (false gods). By traveling to another galaxy, we let the Ori (power-hungry godlike beings) know they could get a whole other galaxy to believe in them. By traveling to another other galaxy, we woke the Wraith (Vampires In Space!).
It’s getting OLD. Voyager tried to do it with the Kazon - a species REJECTED by the Borg as contributing no cultural or technological distintiveness to the collective. Enterprise tried it with the Temporal Cold War, and nobody really knows where that was going.
It would be nice, for once, to have some easily defeated single-episode foes. “Wow,” remarks one guy to another, “it was easy to defeat them!” No more siege mentality from start to finish.
That being said, since Universe is in the title, this villain will probably top all others and threaten the universe itself. (Don’t worry, there are others. At least for now…) The middle of the season, not the pilot, is the best place to reveal such a villain. Or better yet, a bunch of looming, recurring, but not constant threats, such as the Daleks, the Cybermen, and The Master.

So Stargate is huge, huh? Could be worth checking…
October 7th, 2009 at 3:16 pm
To Nick, well we could have the energy absorbing shadow from Star Gate Atlantis turn out to be like the silver surfer/a probe from some massive threat beyond even ascended beings, we would have them pull out a planet eater like Galactus or Unicron, or some higher beyond everything actual god like The One Above All, The Lord of Nightmares, or Tsunami, Washu, and Tokimi from Tenchi Muyo,
or just some other cosmic threat abstract being like Q, The Beyonder, Oblivion, ect…
or being Star Gate do yet another set of “false gods” but base them on HP Lovecraft stuff like Cthulhu and other tentacle freaks.
maybe the Furling will turn out to be some big threat.
and yes Zenstrive Star Gate is huge. the first show lasted for about ten years, Atlantis had potential but died out quickly just so they could do this other show, leaving alot of things up in the air.
October 7th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
Dude, make me a wall paper without speech bubbles!
October 7th, 2009 at 7:25 pm
I get the Voyager “lost in space” ingredient, but the rest of it feels like they took the SG writers and teamed them with the Battlestar filming and visual effects teams. Even the opening battle scenes with shaky-unfocused-cam on the ships was EXACTLY like Battlestar except with an Alkesh instead of a Cylon on screen.
And as others have said the sex scene was completely unneeded. SG1 or SGA would have done that with them coming out of the storeroom re-dressing, instead we get Battlestar flesh treatment. You can’t compate it to Sha’re’s full frontal on SG1, those early seasons of SG1 were produced and aired by Sho-time.
October 7th, 2009 at 7:33 pm
I love the cooking with Teal’c sketch!!! It is sooo accurate. I also have a problem with how they’ve started the new series: SGU. Some of the characters were bad mixes of better characters that were original on different shows, and others were flat out stereotypes!
For it to be a 2 hour premiere where so much was happening - to the point where a lot of things didn’t add up or weren’t properly explained at least - not a lot happened! It’s weird how that works out…
I just sat through the thing. I’ll watch a few more times to see what happens. But, if it keeps on the same track, so long SGU.
October 8th, 2009 at 9:54 am
is the last starfighter movie the one with the kid playing tha arcade machine with a “do not fire” button?
October 8th, 2009 at 3:26 pm
Last Star Fighter was a kid playing an arcade game, he got the high score so aliens abducted him to fight in their war. They called it “THe Excalibur test”. So yeah a kid figuring out a problem put in a video-game is the Last Star Fighter ingredient.
Battle-Star Gallactica: sex, cameras, military and civilians forced to work together to survive, and oh Baltar is there in the form of Rush.
Voyager: a crew find themselves far in deep space trying to find a way home. Except in Star Trek it was just the opposite side of the Galaxy, but given the whole Star Gate premise that wouldn’t work here, nor would just one Galaxy away as they know how to get to Earth from that distance, so we end up with like seven galaxies removed.
October 9th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
@rhuen thnx for that…
October 10th, 2009 at 7:41 pm
LOL.
October 11th, 2009 at 1:42 am
I’ll give it a try but the premier left me at a loss, I did miss some but I don’t know if I just missed some people’s back stories or if they left them out on perpose. Like that lady that was yelling at an officer to find her daughter or something and those guys arguing about being poor.
It’s ok give everybody a back story, but could they not start so many so early?
November 20th, 2009 at 8:50 am
i actually liked SGU. it had alot of simularities with other sci fi (as they all do these days) but for a on the spot abducted from their homes dumped in a constant near death enviroment sci fi its alot better done than the remake of BSG (i still think starbuck is and always should be male).
remembering though that a lost in space theme for scifi is the hardest of the scifi triangle it can be very nice well done well or a flop if pulled off wrong
November 20th, 2009 at 8:53 am
also at the sex in SGU. ok it is over done but they keep it hidden to a degree but really its a new show and remember ep 1 of SG1. Daniels wife is starkers on the table getting feeled up by an alien slug all over her body. that took it way to far but they turned it around into the much loved tv show it is now
November 24th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
I know how they can top the dangers of SG1 and Atlantis. Aliens that eat you and then enslave your zombified remains.

loving your site - wow what a collection of stargate universe information! fancy a link trade? thumbsup from me!
