Lil Formers #174: Mumm-ra
Hey, my first Thundercats strip actually about Thundercats! I always thought the Mumm-ra figure looked like he was wearing a bathrobe heh. The show looked a little better.
Also, Mummies Alive was a much better show than it should have been with such lame-sounding concept. (and considering that it was produced by the people who made the awful Gargoyles Goliath Chronicles season). Mummy superheroes? Whatever, but turned out to be pretty decent. Check it out:

I barely remember Mummies Alive, it was one of those shows I never really got into after watching one episode.
And let us never speak of the evil Gargoyles: The Goliath Chronicles season ever again.
December 7th, 2009 at 10:31 am
Hell yeah, Mumm-ra, Marr-mutt, ssslyth and a shout out to mummys alive ^^
December 7th, 2009 at 10:44 am
I’d rather have had another season of Gargoyles than “Goliath Chronicles” or “Mummies Alive”, but I agree MA was a lot better than it had any right to be. MA was still not a patch on Skeleton Warriors though (The Skeleton designs were creepy as hell, the good guys didn’t always win and it had Tony Jay as the Oracle Skull, what’s not to love?)
December 7th, 2009 at 11:20 am
That egyptian based show is missing something….o yeah the card games!!
December 7th, 2009 at 11:31 am
I vaguely remember that show too…
December 7th, 2009 at 11:52 am
@Icon_UK: Skeleton Warriors has the best theme song ever!!
December 7th, 2009 at 11:54 am
yupp XD card games
but they also had a slim nerd-version of the serpentor outfit … i think that was my only reason to watch it , that and it had a female mummy
* Mumm-Ra’s reason i suspect ^__^ *
goliath chronicles , sheesh , one show that had a kick-butt premise only to lose energy in the last season with DISNEY-Controlled media
( think about it , every K.A. disney cartoon that lasted more than 2 seasons weas awesome , the rest you go WTF @ how come they didnt continue )
December 7th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
ps . KUDOS M2 ^__^
(cheers Mumm-Ra like the twins did in “dogs of war -comic series” )
trust me that scene is epic ^__^
December 7th, 2009 at 1:33 pm
Oh man, I can remember watching Mummies alive while getting ready to go to school. Thanks for the flashback!
December 7th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
This is really scary. I’ve been marathoning MA eps on youtube since Friday. Get out of my head Matt!!
~*KA*~
December 7th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
OOh i remember mummies alive, watched that in the mornings before school. that and monster rancher… ahh good times they were
December 7th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
Mummies Alive! was easily one of my fav shows back in the day <3 I wish they’d release a box set or something of all the episodes, I’d totally buy it.
December 7th, 2009 at 5:52 pm
I remember that show, used to watch it every saturday along with digimon and monster ranchers.
cant remember how it ended though… XP
December 7th, 2009 at 6:24 pm
@jaganar:
Actually, Goliath Chronicles was a crappy spin-off/sequel to Gargoyles, done with an entirely different crew. Kind of like Beast Machines, lol.
December 7th, 2009 at 7:09 pm
I’d rather watch Goliath Chronicles than read that Dogs of War comic Jaganar just mentioned. I think GC was hampered by the limitations of Saturday Morning Network as opposed to Weekday Syndication cartooning. It wasn’t designed for the former.
December 7th, 2009 at 7:32 pm
MUMM-RA! Awesome!
I was wondering when the Thundercats would show up. Very nice.
December 7th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
@ shadowwing / jarkes
guys when it came on originally it was on its last legs remember , i was under the impression it was nothing but remixes with new scenes added to each episode . altho i do remember the alternate reality where lex went ape-crap
and took everyone out *that was a WTF moment*
Ps (extra credit @ shadow) oh come on dude dont u remember the chant that mumm-ra had from the thunderkittens
that was epic ^_^ plus panthro’s reaction … LOL
December 7th, 2009 at 10:32 pm
p.p.s .
come on what female mumies do we have , anaksunamun ( mummy 1-2) and the chick from MA , voiced by cree summer . you gata give the guy some credit he has to represent Old School hotties .
December 7th, 2009 at 11:39 pm
I don’t like much Mummy Alive, but the Nerfetina, are so much in my ero-histories^^
Someone remember Ulissys in the Space?
December 7th, 2009 at 11:41 pm
A Mummies Alive reference! Never thought I’d see that. XD
I loved that show; I watched it every time it was on and managed to find a dvd of the first few episodes. Very nice~ Definitely made my day. XD
And Mumm-Ra is adorable.
December 8th, 2009 at 12:02 am
Sorry, Jaganar, but there is so much wrong with pretty much the entire Wildstorm run, but I’m not sure if Dogs of War or Hammerhand’s Revenge was the worst of the lot. I’d say “The Return” because of what the writer did to the characters (especially Cheetara), but at least they felt like the characters I grew up with, even if how they were used played chicken with “apprehensible”.
December 8th, 2009 at 12:38 am
I loved Mummies Alive! i had the toys back in the day, they reminded me of beetleborgs to some extent. nice strip this week matt!
December 8th, 2009 at 12:54 am
@shadowwing
um lets not forget the OBVIOUS , sex slave and breaking in (jailbait) of WilyKit by MR. that part gave me the ultimate WTF moment in my entire comic book history.
LOL @ beetleborgs , i still swear thats JAY LENO under the pancake makeup XD
December 8th, 2009 at 2:13 am
I used to watch Mummies Alive for the intro. It was really catchy, but the rest of the show was..eh…
December 8th, 2009 at 3:13 am
The 90’s eh….well, it was a lost time for me…
December 8th, 2009 at 4:55 am
cute!
why don’t u also do The Bionic Six and Voltron?
December 8th, 2009 at 4:57 am
and also Visionaries!!!
December 8th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
I didn’t like Mummies Alive, mostly because my local station replaced Beast Wars with that show. (Middle of the second season of BW; they eventually brought it back, long story)
I had my priorites, after all.
December 8th, 2009 at 7:55 pm
@jaganar:
I remember that alternate reality episode too. I think that was actually a regular Gargoyles episode. And I have no idea what your talking about with this Wildstorm, Dogs of War, and Hammerhead’s Revenge stuff…
December 8th, 2009 at 7:58 pm
I suppose that’s because I didn’t grow up in the 80’s. I grew up in the 90’s! Which is why the first TF show I saw was Beast Wars. Actually, when Beast Machines first came out, since I was about 8 or 9, I was like, “OMG, THIS IS SO COOL!” Several years later, I came across an episode on TV, and was like, “OMG, THIS IS TOTAL CRAP!” lol
December 8th, 2009 at 7:59 pm
Actually, I only watched it that time for about five seconds before I turned it off in disgust, lol.
…Do I use “lol” too much? …lol.
December 8th, 2009 at 8:45 pm
Loved Thundercats and Mummies alive, but watching the intro got me thinking about all the other cartoons out there that I used to watch all the time. Does anyone remember Bots Master? “Its Laser time boys…. Game over.” LOL
December 8th, 2009 at 9:30 pm
I remember that show! I thought it was pretty good!(Mummies Alive, I mean….and Gargoyles).
December 8th, 2009 at 11:00 pm
I remember Bots Master. Sometimes I wish I didn’t. But it had Ninjz, which was all it had right besides the Voltron ripoff Jungle Fiver. Ninjz was great, but being a robot ninja I shouldn’t have to tell you that.
Jarkes, Wildstorm is a comic company that had the license for Thundercats for a while, and did a poor job with it. The first miniseries was decent, and the two anthology specials were hit and miss depending on the story. “The Return” put the characters through a real nightmare that showed you can get a character right and still show a lack of love for them. “Dogs of War” had the Thundercats battle the War Dogs (wish I was kidding), and Hammerhand’s Revenge was the single worst use of Snarf in the history of the property. There was one more mini that I couldn’t bring myself to read,
There was also a weird set of crossovers with Top Cow’s use of Battle of the Planets (why? darned if I know), which Top Cow did something really good with and Wildstorm gave me pain. I haven’t read the Superman crossover in a while, but I don’t remember it being all that exciting.
December 9th, 2009 at 12:45 pm
Funny as always Matt.
You definitely need to do a “Battle of the Planets” panel -w/ Mark, Jason, Hunk, Princess, Ke-up and the little robot dog that flies around by spinning its tail. - Especially the last three |)
December 9th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
What’s so bad about Gargoyles: Goliath Chronicles? I, for one, actually LIKED it! It was cool! Short lived, but cool nonetheless! Plus Mummies Alive I enjoyed, too!
December 9th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
@jarkes ; dude like i said , mumm-ra made wily-kit his sexslave (and dont give me that crap about no she wasnt, nor was it implied…) it had the subtlety of a carbomb.
mumm-ra shagged her(after he conquered the world and up to the end of “the return”) and i kina remember her being like what 12 officially in the series. and he ruled the world for i think 5 years so DAMN O_o ….. eeew
@shadowwing ; dogs was a cute lil story but i hated the artist because he kina ruined an old side story from wetworks (series 1)”the lone one”. and i was contemplating picking up hammerhand … didnt care so i left it alone .
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
seriosly where the heck does one get that lil mumm-ra as a plushy ^__^
and a ravage for that matter
December 9th, 2009 at 7:57 pm
First of all, awesome awesome strip. I’d totally support a week with nothing but shout outs to old school cartoons of the eighties and ninties. Exosquad FTW!!! and matt, don’t tell me you don’t know bout exosquad, you are way too cool not to know exosquad.
Now, as for the Wildstorm Thundercat comics, the first story arc was pretty hit or miss. it really felt like the writers were just getting their feet wet, though lion-o fighting a resurrected groon to the death for leadership of the thundercats was a cool finish. I also love the end were mumm ra reflects that everything that happened was a way to lull the thundercats into complacency while he gathers strength. Made the character seem more intelligent than he ever was in the show. I swear, in the show he was fricken retarded at some points.
As for the Return, well Wily-Kat was 18 in that story, so uh yah, guess some chicas grow up.
as for the story, me and my friends respected it. It had logic (too many mutants are on planet for the thundarian citizens to rise up, so the T-cats need to make Guerrilla strikes) Having the mutants use cheetara as a sex toy was a shock, but I rolled with it and actually respected the stones it took to do something like that. Mumm-ra taking the kits as his slaves and using Kit as his sex slave when she matured was the pen-ultimate slap in the face to the thundercats, and the ultimate was tricking Kat into betraying the T-cats, than making a big show of killing him in front of everyone, and plotting to use the still alive Kat as a brainwashed object of revenge. I loved how cut-throat and sadistic mumm-ra was.
Oh, and snarf being bat-guano insane was also a treat.
Then they replaced the writer, and the whole thing went right to pot.
Dogs of war was almost as good as the first series, then they ended it on such a WTF moment. I mean, seriously, wtf happened to the awesome mumm-ra from the first two series. Hammerhands revenge and the subsequent stories were also lame as hell. need proof.
Ro-Bear-Burtles transforming into bazooka packing War-Bear-burtles.
If I had actually purchased the comic I was reading, I would have ripped it in half right there.
So yah, thats all I gotta say about that.
EXOSQUAD EXOSQUAD EXOSQUAD
December 10th, 2009 at 2:59 am
irish . um only kit was his sex slave and im not dealing with subtly here . he broke her in young because
1. hes a baddy and villans dont follow rules
2. he wanted to scar them both n knowing him he probaby did it while Kat (male) was hypnotized and in chains (while they were both minors) .
3. doing this meant that the spirit would be broken which would explain y the twins were so willing to do the things in “the return”
and to quote ole slithhhhhhhe “its been years since i ate a snarf” (best line ever , if snarf was a girl XD)
December 10th, 2009 at 3:00 am
apologies to M2 for hijacking the comment thread for this *wipes his head because of nervousness*
December 10th, 2009 at 12:56 pm
Well, thanks for clearing that up for me. To be honest, I only saw a couple episodes of Thundercats. I remember it being incredibly cheesy, even though I was, like, 6 or 7 when I saw it (by then it was probably just reruns).
December 10th, 2009 at 12:57 pm
Most of the cheesy 80’s stuff I saw as reruns I actually LIKED when I was 6 or 7, but now it’s like, “Oh my God, this is horrible.”
December 10th, 2009 at 10:31 pm
@ jagnar, yes I know only kit was his sex slave. and as for the snarf line, lets not go reading too much sensuality into the story. I think it was just the writers intent to have mumm-ra have beaten the thundercats in every way possible. And while I think the jury is still out on what went on with cheetara and kit, just seeing kit bathing him, and seeing what he did to panthro and bengali (and I never liked the latter, most worthless T-cat ever), well the writer really did get the msg across that mumm-Ra had pretty much conquered thunderra in every way possible.
Also, I dont think there was any hypnotism, as far as I can see, the writer just wanted to get it across that the planet was in such a sorry state that everyone, including the T-kids, had given up all hope. And the reason that Mumm-Ra doesn’t just go out there and kill lion-o, is that he’s enjoying lion-o’s pain at what has become of thunderra.
As for lines or moments, I’m personally fond of lion-o using the *Thundercats HO* to make the beaten thunderian miners rally against the mutants. awesome moment.
Like I said, I wanted to see that storyline continue, it felt fresh and did so many different things with the characters. Than the writer got canned, and the next story is ten years later and the T-cats are ruling the roost again, without any explanation. And don’t even get me started on the last few pages. thats an utter WTF.
December 11th, 2009 at 12:47 am
@ irish
want to meet at Quarks later and settle this over some Klingon Bloodwine and Rokeg blood pie. do this discussion in style ^__^
you bring the Gagh .
December 11th, 2009 at 10:05 pm
I’m so lost. XD
December 12th, 2009 at 2:30 am
@jagnar and Irish
i’m pretty sure all this analysis about Kit n Cheetara is only because u two horndogs got totally turned on by all this perversion done to one of our favorite childhood cartoons! (hey! i respect that! in the same boat! :p)
the writers realized that all the TC fans had become adults (at least biologically) and had to make “necessary” “modifications”! :p
December 12th, 2009 at 10:59 am
Never heard of Mummies Alive….but it looks like Yu Gi Oh without the cards. *lol*
As for Goliath Chronicles. Thank the gods that it’s not canon, except for the first ep cuz it was done by Greg Weisman before Disney screwed him over. Thankfully the official 3rd season was done by SLG. Still waiting on word if Boom Studios will pick it up for a 4th…heck Im still waiting for SOMEBODY to pick up Spectacular Spider-man for a 3rd cuz darn it…I want more Gargoyles/Spidey crossovers!! *lol*
December 13th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
@Dierna:
You mean an OFFICIAL Gargoyles/Spidery crossover… lol.
And actually, Greg Weisman actually has a third, fourth, AND fifth season for Spectacular Spider-Man all figured out, because he plans ahead, unlike some other cartoon writers I know.
December 13th, 2009 at 7:09 pm
Jarkas:
There’s an official one. In the SLG Gargoyles comic there was an issue where Brooklyn finds the phoenix gate on the roof of the Daily Bugle. *lol*
Aye.. I know Greg’s planned all the seasons of Spider-man. You should see all the stuff he has planned for Gargoyles. He’s got over 300 pages worth of the timelines alone! Some of it can be seen on the Gargoyles wiki.
December 14th, 2009 at 8:14 am
@Anubis_Necromancer frm Brazil
The show was called “Ulysses 31″ in French and English, and was indeed fantastic, with sci-fi Greek style designs by Shingo Araki.
December 14th, 2009 at 12:20 pm
It was a cool show.
January 29th, 2010 at 9:32 pm
LOL, i remember watching this as a kid, used to think it was quite a good show back then
April 11th, 2010 at 11:40 pm
OMG! I laughed soo friggin hard when I saw this!!!
I grew up with Thundercats and later enjoyed Mummies Alive…it’s SO great to see that others can still get the references and enjoy them. GREAT COMIC!
Totally believable that Mum-ra would do that
July 17th, 2010 at 6:43 pm
Your love for obscure cartoons makes me wonder, have you ever heard of the Creepy Crawlies Cartoon? It was basically creatures made with those creepy crawlies machines or whatever they were called, and it was awesome. Even the guy who’s gimmick was he was made of rings managed to kick ass!
August 5th, 2010 at 12:46 am
I really miss that show…. sniff…. NOSTALGIA!!!!
January 30th, 2011 at 10:58 pm
no offense, but that mummy thing is practicly ben 10,
i mean a kid who can control 10 figures who are humanoids but not actual humans, wiht individual powers?
im sorry, its just so,
BEN 10 RIPPED IT OFF!!!
