Lil Formers #178: Spider-man

Yes it’s true, Spider-man 4 is cancelled since Sony wouldn’t stop messing with it causing Sam Raimi(director) and Tobey Maguire(Spidey) to quit. Now they are planning to reboot the whole franchise… lame. The first two movies were pretty perfect, so they can’t really  ‘bring Spidey back to his roots’ with a reboot like Batman Begins. There’s nothing to fix…they can only destroy. Oh well.

Also, YES, some fools are still trying to make a Spidey musical. It is quite probably the end of days. Somewhere Mephisto is wearing a pair of mouse ears and cackling.

I’ve read on Robotech.com’s forums that Maguire’s gonna work on the live action Robotech movie.

  2. Armorock

I thought the third one was good too, but it’s definetely too early for a reboot. Oh well. Spidey’s still awesome

  3. Denton

The only cool thing would be if Marvel reboots Spider-man into the Avengers franchise they have going on.

  4. Sabre_Justice

Heck, a Spider-man musical could be pretty fun if they do it right.

I mean c’mon, imagine the Green Goblin’s song.

  5. Adam Jewer

Not suppose to say this, but I work for a major credit card company and there clients currently can purchase ticket to the spider-man the musical, Titled ‘Turn off the dark’, is still a go, with Music by the Edge and Bono of U2. I cry every time some person with too much money calls to purchase a pair of tickets!

  6. Adam Jewer

Sorry forgot, it starts on Feb 25, 2010 in New York on Broadway!

The last news I heard about the Spidey-4 flick before the hammer fell was that sony was pressuring Sam Rami to change the villain. I would wager that Sony in all their focus group gathering, fad of the moment greed, noted that in the comics Norman Osborne is pretty much ruling the roost, and tried to get sam to bring him back.

I’m not too sad about the cancellation though, with Harry dead, the primary B-plot of the series was done. Anything else after that would have been a lesser sequel, the rebooting sounds even lamer, like Ultimate Spider-man the movie.

Oh yah, and I also liked Spidey-3. after the second part, its my favorite of the trilogy.

  8. Stotty

Its far too early to reboot the spiderman franchise. And why reboot it anyway? I’m sure there are plenty of comic book villians yet and its not unusual to change actors in a franchise. Even if they don’t like the choice of villians … why not be creative and make up a new villian?

  9. TriPredRavage

For me, it’s less about rebooting the story, and more about rebooting the character. The films didn’t do Spidey justice. He almost never quipped, which anybody knows is a major staple of the character.

My only other desire is that they make sure the villain stories are actually related to Spidey. Personally, I hate Spider-Man 2 because Doc Ock has nothing to do with it. He’s in the background as Spidey is off in lala land, and then it was like they needed to tie him back to the story, so they had him kidnap Mary Jane. Really Spidey 3’s only saving grace is that it’s over abundance of villains were all connected to the hero in some way.

  10. Stinkoman87

I only want a reboot if A) it’s done by Marvel Studios, and therefore Spidey can be in the Avengers movie, and B) he starts bantering. Otherwise he doesn’t need it.

  11. NotU

At one point, Sony had announced that the Spider-man reboot was going to put Peter back in high school.

  12. KD

The Spider-man musical was organised before Spider-man 3 came out.

And the Spider-man movies were far from perfect. They didn’t understand the character. As other’s have mentioned, one of Spider-man’s defining attributes was completely overlooked, his banter, with the exception of the fight with the wrestler, And one proper Spider-man fight in three movies is not good enough. Without the quips, it’s no wonder he got beaten to a pulp in every movie. It’s like if, instead of Batman using fear and attacking from the shadows, he just walked up to armed robbers and said “please don’t do that”. It would be completely out of character.

I hope this reboot pays close attention to the Spectacular Spider-man cartoon, the truest adaptation of Spider-man to any screen.

  13. Jarkes

    REALLY? …That’s crap.
Also, the Spider-man musical is a ROCK musical, with music by U2, so it can’t be that bad.

  14. Ryan

Wow, you invoked ‘One More Day’. Somewhere Linkara is crying.

  15. Kagalei

I thought Spider-man the animated series was the truest adaption. You know the 90’s one. Anyway, awesome comic Matt. And unless someone here has a lot of money that they plan on sharing, there is not much we, as the fans, can do about the reboot. And I have to agree, Spider-man not making sarcasting remarks furing his fights is like Tony Stark not being a playboy.

  16. Strykor

Have you been reading Twisted ToyFare Theatre again, Mr. Moylan?

  17. tentagil

Sony will put something out simply to milk what money they can from the franchise before they lose the rights and they revert back to Marvel. Not sure how many more years they have it for, but like X-Men I’m sure we will see several more pictures in the next few years so they can get as much cash as they can from before Marvel takes back the reigns.

  18. Matt Moylan

@Strykor: They still make that? I thought those guys quit to go make Robot Chicken…

  19. TheFreak

Irish is mostly right. When it was originally shelved, G4 had a thing about it, stating the problem was that Raimi wanted to use Vulture as the villian, and Sony wanted someone more interesting. Personally I’m glad. Raimi is too stuck in the Golden Age for his characters.

That’s the reason Spider-Man 3 wasn’t as good. He wanted JUST Sandman. Marvel and Sony requested Venom, because of him being a fan favorite and constantly being asked for. He doesn’t like Venom, so he just phoned in everything. I swear he intentionally screwed up Venom to make him look bad. So if you didn’t like Spidey 3, you have one person to blame: RAIMI HIMSELF.

  20. Matt Moylan

@TheFreak: No director would intentionally make a bad movie.

Also note… there is no golden age Spidey heh. He didn’t show up until the 60’s

  21. General Tekno

    Well, re: the comic itself.

If Neil Patrick Harris were playing Doc Ock there, it would automatically be win.

  22. Grimmjow Jeagerjaques

TheFreak is absolutely right. Raimi’s ridiculous hard-on for the Silver Age wrecked this franchise. I totally understand why Gobbie and Doc Ock came first, but Venom definitely deserved better. Raimi’s irrational distain for the character (and he had publicly said he hated Venom without giving a valid reason in at least one interview) was totally unprofessional and honestly ridiculous. Regardless of how Raimi felt, this was one of Spidey’s biggest villains from one of his most memorable stories. Did Raimi really think he’d be able to make movie after movie in this franchise all the while ignoring Venom? Come on man! I’m really glad he’s off this franchise. I’m a little worried about the WoW movie, hopefully he’ll do a better job on that.

  23. ShadowWing Tronix

Venom should have been done a lot better. Black suit in 3, Venom in 4. And I’ve heard tell that they were planning to reboot after 4 anyway, so it’s not like it wasn’t in the planning stages. Maybe they wanted to kick out MJ, too. Even Ultimate had them break up (again).

And yes, the movie was too low on witty banter, 90’s Spider-Man was the best written (at least in plot, Spectacular has more life in the characters, Unlimited had the best animation as far as how Spidey moves–plus Rino Ramano is often the Spidey in my head, and Amazing Friends had the more comic-accurate character models), and Spidey in the Avengers Movieverse would be…amazing. (Had to say it.)

  24. GREENARR0W

@Jarkes - as noted above, not all of U2 just Bono and The Edge, the sappy side of U2.

  25. wheeljack

This is funny cause a person and i depated who could be in it not carnage cause venom is dead :(

  26. Zenstrive

    hehehehe, mephisto, hehehehe

  27. TheFreak

@ShadowWing..that might have worked actually. I think though Sony and Marvel were a little too worried that there wouldnt be a 4th. Toby and Kirsten, even Raimi were barely brought back for 3…so they wanted to get the fan fave out in case 3 was it. Remember, they almost re-cast Spidey in 3, because Toby injured his back (maybe it was 2?) doing Seabiscuit. He managed to pull through, but there was worry he might be done with it.

  28. Asher Tye

Sad to hear about the Spiderman 4 not coming through. I was kinda looking forward to it.

  29. maharg83

Why is marvel doing all these reboots? OK so there’s likely going to be 2 what with this and Fantastic Four

  30. D-340

Oh, there is everything to fix. All 3 Spider-Man movies sucked. I’d personally start with the casting of Mary Jane, Kirsten Dunst was EPIC FAIL!

  31. Bee

    Okay

  32. Bee

    That’s freaky!!

  33. Stine

I’m pretty glad they canceled SM4. it was going downhill after 3, and 4 would’ve definitely been worse! the magic (usually) always fades with sequels, so it’s all for the best!

but yes, Spidey is a very versatile character… a musical might not be bad! :)

u oldies, do u remember Spidey used to feature in The Electric Company? and Mr. Morgan Freeman was there too… as the Datacula…lol he was awesome and genuinely scary in the eyes of an 8 yr old!

    totally awesome

(the info is here)not plugging just helping you out on the article in question >>http://www.deadline.com/hollywood/urgent-spider-man-4-scrapped-as-is-raimi-and-cast-out-franchise-reboot-planned/

“Here is the Sony press release:
Culver City, CA (January 11, 2010) — Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012. Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today they are moving forward with a film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises.”

in all honesty im feeling a litle part of me die , when i heard this because i was expecting Malkovich to mess spidey’s mind up up as Vulture and basicly destroy Spidey like Heath’s Joker did BATMAN :)
(beat him mentally and scar him for life , as seen in the dk) leaving a broken spider , plus in my book old Sam atleast respected the franchise to make us go “MAKE MINES MARVEL” happily .
ill miss the goblin/ harry (all that tech) and the CHANCE that we all know OF HIM and his DAD busting out of that coffin
~which should have come in WEBHEAD 4 ~
and if they were going with it KRAVEN as Oded Fehr ( who wouldnt want to see him purr with that hot Accent again )IN KRAVENS REAL COSTUME no crappy re-interpretation
    >__>

look him up if you dont know who i am talking about :)
and GUYS : a reboot should only follow A DECADE AFTER the original , IF there is a team worthy of carrying the Web-heads legacy .

bottom line ::: IF IT AINT BROKE DONT FIX IT .

  36. Hot Rodimus

haha…a musical spider man will be hilarious…

  37. LORD TARZAN

I personally liked Spiderman 1 & 2, but Spiderman 3?? Talk about rushing… Venom didn’t use his line of “we”, Sandman just hanging out, Harry dead. It is probably time for a recap. Besides, I enjoy the Spectacular Spiderman as well as the 90’s Spiderman show. I just wish Hollywood would work to bring the character to life instead of trying to make a profit. When I see it on the screen I should be memorized, as if I am right there, recording Spidey’s life. Other than that, witty comics as ever Mr. Moylan. I enjoy when you tie in an 80’s cartoon w/ the 90’s or real life. I especially enjoy the Avatar and MMPR.

  38. ☆☆☆ JaganaR ☆☆☆

    @ hot rodimus :)
can you imagine a more epic scene than a KLINGON CHRISTMAS carol
WHOOPS , i can ; sung by ole venom drunk on egg nog and the half eaten bodies of gingerbread men ( shrek version ,☆ naturally ☆)
just that would be worth the price of admission

    Jaggy

  39. Jarkes

    @Kagelei:
Perhaps, but the ridiculous censorship (Spidey was not allowed to land on pigeons; seriously) hurt the 90s show really badly.

  40. Jarkes

    @D-340:
I happened to LIKE Kirsten Dunst as Mary-Jane… except for in 3. She annoyed me there.

  41. Bee

The first movie was good, but then the second was a bit overacted, and the third was just plain and bad

  42. ☆☆☆ JaganaR ☆☆☆

but we all agree the TECH were AWESOME …
doc’s arms were totally STEAMPUNK-esque and goblin was a masterpeice .

  43. Nick

I have to wonder how Bono and The Edge are going to work their environmental agenda into the musical. And yes, with them involved, it will suck. U2 is one of the most overrated bands ever. And Bono is one of the biggest douches around.

  44. insertnickname

I’m actually positive about the rebooting idea. Mainly because the third movie was so incredibly bad that I wouldn’t accept more of that screwed up universe.

The second reason is because I believe one of the reasons that spidey 3 was so bad was because there was nothing more to explore from the the cast and the crew. Say what you will about the producers and Quesada, but Sam Raimi also screwed up the movie (not intentionally, but he was irresponsible and lazy), and I don’t think he could make another good spider-man movie. Tobey Maguire is not a bad actor, bur he’s no Downey Jr., and Kirsten Dunst… ugh.

The first movies were good, but not perfect. Spidey 1 was forgettable and had some lame moments, spidey 2 was awesome and well developed, but it also was somewhat predictable, so there IS room for improvement (maybe they should start by stop trying to turn MJ into Gwen Stacy). It’s like Burton’s Batman: people think it’s the best, until someone come with something better.

And a reboot could go on with the story, skipping origin details, just like the Edward Norton’s Hulk. There is even people that call that movie “Hulk 2″.

That all being said, I do realize that there is a great chance that the reboot. But spidey 4 would probably be worse.

  45. Grimlock Jr.

yeah, He’ll be laughing up until he notices those ears!!! and I really don’t want to see a reboot, they overdo it with comics, anyways.

  46. Grimlock Jr.

Speaking of which, who knows what’s next with Disney owning Marvel, crossovers, Kingdom Hearts with Marvel hero and villain guest stars *pinches bridge of nose* nyeh, gives me a headache.

  47. Shan

Oooh, the musical should feature “My Immortal” by Evanescence.

I liked Spider-Man 1 and 2 more after seeing 3, which was a total joke. But I was never all that enamoured with it to begin with. It hit the right notes Spider-Man wise and I loved the 90s cartoon. I can’t place my finger on what it was that disappointed me. I wouldn’t want Spider-Man to be anything like TDK in its tone, but somehow it still felt too kiddy for me.

  48. Shcokblast

Doc Ock is lame as it is. Matt, you’ve really outdone yourself on the 3-year-old haircut. Nice!

i assum that i am a total marvel nerd *pushes up glasses on nose* cause after seeing this i got the ulitmate gide to spider-man. i though that stan lee wanted kraven the hunter in it

  51. Zartan

It’s too soon for a reboot :( I fell in love with Marvel before I even learned to speak, so it’s always hard when a movie comes out, my heart says “yes” but my mind says: “how could Marvel let this happen!! Deadpool’s swords comming out of his arms!?? Juggernaut helmet sucks!! Nicolas Cage is cool and all, but couldnt they get a “younger” actor?! Why couldnt they just make Blackheart CGI?! like in the freaking comics and the Thing in CGI?! isnt cheaper than paying an actor?! Blade I and II where SO cool, why they did that on the third?! and so on and so on…
I really like a lot: Punisher Warzone (definitely not for kids) Dr. Strange animated movie and…surprinsingly I liked Man-Thing, the swampiest movie of all.

  52. ...

The first TWO movies were pretty perfect? Hmm…I think you forgot to mention another one…
