Lil Formers #182: Beautiful Music
Got a lot of suggestions for properties to tackle this week. Here’s my attempt to please a bunch of you
*Note: Yes, flautist is the correct term for someone who plays the flute heh.

February 22nd, 2010 at 4:05 pm
I’m more impressed he can play anything through a helmet
February 22nd, 2010 at 4:06 pm
nice job! so funny!
February 22nd, 2010 at 4:37 pm
Hey Matt, we missed you! Any updates on what you’re working on?
@Sinclair. You totaly have a point!
@kev… well, nothing. He doesn’t exist.
February 22nd, 2010 at 4:37 pm
Ignore kev, he’s just looking for trouble.
Funny comic. I’m not sure who the first guy is though. And is “Flutists” supposed to have an “a” there? Is that supposed to be some pun?
FINALLY, LINK! …even if it’s not exactly Zelda-related. Oh, well.
February 22nd, 2010 at 4:38 pm
@Jarkes: The first guy is Jean-Luc Piccard (Star treck)
February 22nd, 2010 at 4:38 pm
…Oh, that’s Captain Picard. Wait… when did he play the flute?
February 22nd, 2010 at 4:38 pm
*Trek*
February 22nd, 2010 at 4:39 pm
@Fago:
I figured that out right before you posted that comment. Or possibly at the same exact time…
February 22nd, 2010 at 4:44 pm
Does Tommy’s presence in this strip have anything to do with the recent “re-mastering” of the original Power Rangers? Re-mastering is in quotes because they screwed around with it a bit too; Seriously, they added 60′S BATMAN-STYLE SOUND EFFECTS! And “Boss Subtitles,” but THAT I can forgive since, as it happens, the original Japanese Sentai version (Zyuranger) had those, so it’s something of a reverse homage. But… 60′S BATMAN-STYLE SOUND EFFECTS? SERIOUSLY? DANGIT DISNEY, WHY’D YOU HAVE TO MESS WITH IT? WHY COULDN’T YOU JUST CLEAN UP THE PICTURE AND SOUND, LIKE A REMASTERING IS SUPPOSED TO DO? huff… hoof… Sorry about that.

TNG: “The Inner Light”
In 2368, the Enterprise encountered a space probe of unknown origin, which emitted a nucleonic beam directly at Picard. This led to his fainting and awakening on an unknown world where he was known as an ironworker named Kamin and was married to Eline. Picard later found out that Kamin was a member of the Ressik community on a planet called Kataan. For five years, Picard clung to his life aboard the Enterprise and searched for ways to return, but eventually settled into his life as Kamin, having two children with Eline and eventually a grandchild. In the approximately 35 years Picard spent as Kamin, he learned to play the Ressikan flute, dabbled in astronomy, and analyzed soil samples from the planet, eventually confirming that Kataan was a dying world.
Near the end of his life on Kataan, it was revealed to Picard that Kataan had been destroyed more than 1,000 years previously, and the residents of the Ressik community had engineered the probe to share the memory and experiences of their people with someone who could then teach others about their civilization. He awoke on the Enterprise as Jean-Luc Picard once more, and discovered that he had lived a lifetime in only 25 minutes. The probe was collected by the Enterprise and disassembled. A Ressikan flute was found inside the probe, which Riker then presented to Picard.

@Jarkes
Its another way of saying flutist

February 22nd, 2010 at 4:54 pm
I agree with Jarkes. It’s ’bout time that Link made an appearance in LFs other than the The End? comic.
February 22nd, 2010 at 5:53 pm
Great! Three of my favorite unrelated icons in one comic! Great job!
February 22nd, 2010 at 5:59 pm
The Pied Piper must be somewhere off stage kicking himself for not making the cut..LOL
February 22nd, 2010 at 6:51 pm
I belive Link is mute, or he’s not a big talker, he communicates through the ocarina or sword
February 22nd, 2010 at 6:52 pm
MASTER sword, that is.
February 22nd, 2010 at 7:06 pm
PFFT… That’s hilarious. And just in time too, since I guess Power Rangers are going to be re-released again.
February 22nd, 2010 at 7:09 pm
Throw in Batman & you’ve got a quartet!
February 22nd, 2010 at 7:19 pm
lol so funny and cute
February 22nd, 2010 at 7:53 pm
OK, I’m a bit late to the party, but being married to a professionally trained flutist, I have to throw my two cents in to say that “flautist is the correct term for someone who plays the flute” is categorically false.
At least, if he insists on “the” being in that sentence. If “the” is replaced by “a,” I have no objection.
“Flautists” is a perfectly good word, and it IS a way for referring to someone to plays the flute.
But it is NOT “the correct term.” It is merely an alternative.
Rant over.
February 22nd, 2010 at 7:55 pm
The inventor of the flute is rolling over in his grave.
February 22nd, 2010 at 8:21 pm
Funny comic. Funny.
But still, there needs to be a War For Cybertron strip.
February 22nd, 2010 at 9:36 pm
Bloody Brilliant
February 22nd, 2010 at 10:01 pm
THIS IS JUST EPIC!!
February 22nd, 2010 at 10:29 pm
Haven’t seen Link since your 100th episode! Too bad he still doesn’t have any lines…
February 22nd, 2010 at 10:30 pm
ROFL ROFL ROFL
hate all three… but love the strip!!!
February 22nd, 2010 at 11:04 pm
Go go power rangers!
And Link, You too!
February 22nd, 2010 at 11:16 pm
@sonicownsmarioeverytime:
First thing: Your name is incorrect. Mario’s games have FAR more consistent quality. There have only been a few stinkers, and those were all “edutainment” games, so OF COURSE they sucked. Well, okay, there was Hotel Mario… That’s not to say I don’t like Sonic though. I just wish Sega didn’t try to introduce some new gimmick in every new Sonic game. (though Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 looks to change that)
Two: OF COURSE LINK DOESN’T HAVE ANY LINES.
Speaking of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1, are you going to do a comic about that, Matt? …I did not intend that rhyme at the end. Oh, there I go again, I’ll just stop and… dang, I can’t think of another rhyme. lol
February 22nd, 2010 at 11:18 pm
Also speaking of Sonic, I’ve noticed that Nintendo Power is a little… biased. They’ve given every Sonic game for the past 5 years at least an 8.0, even when everyone else hates it. Examples: Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic and the Secret Rings, Sonic Unleashed (Admittedly, I enjoyed that one…) and Sonic and the Black Knight (IGN gave that a 3.9).
February 22nd, 2010 at 11:41 pm
A Power Rangers strip! Awesome! I suggested that!
And Link! Link and the Ocarina!
This has gotta be one of the funniest comics yet, I love it!
February 22nd, 2010 at 11:43 pm
I wonder what they were playing. *in the background* ~fighting evil by moonlight…~
~*KA*~
February 23rd, 2010 at 12:37 am
I saw a documentary once (I’m sure a lot of you have seen it too) about an auction that took place where they auctioned off a whole warehouse of Star Trek stuff, mostly stuff that was actually on the show (costumes, props, etc). One of the items was THE FLUTE. They showed some guy freaking after winning it by paying an obscene amount for it. They immediately cut to Patrick Stewart who was giving an interview, and he said something like, “You can’t actually play it.” He was laughing as he said it and the tone of his voice made it sound like he was amazed that someone would actually pay a significant amount of money for it.
February 23rd, 2010 at 1:39 am
And furthermore, I haven’t played Ocarina Of Time (or at least Majora’s Mask) for ages. And this comic is so freaking sweet! Speaking of Legend of Zelda… I better get some good amount of Nintendo points to get Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past for the Wii’s Virtual Console.
Oh BTW, Amarock
Congrats’ on winning the suggestion.
February 23rd, 2010 at 1:39 am
oops… I meant, *Armorock
(stupid typo)
February 23rd, 2010 at 2:19 am
Green Ranger and Picard FTW
February 23rd, 2010 at 4:42 am
His solo is so beautiful that it’s ok that the dragonzord just stepped on an orphanage.
February 23rd, 2010 at 10:36 am
That just made my night, seriously.
(re Tommy that’s not to mention the mouthplate in his helmet between his mouth and the dagger)
February 23rd, 2010 at 11:27 am
Crap, I drew Picard in a DS9/Voyager uniform…oh well, he did wear it in one movie.
February 23rd, 2010 at 1:16 pm
@Matt Moylan
I just gotta say you’ve made my life great for taking my suggestion, it makes me feel awesome. Again, very funny stuff
February 23rd, 2010 at 1:54 pm
@ Endocrom. Dragonzod doesn’t smash orphanages. He just devours candy cane smokestacks.
February 23rd, 2010 at 2:33 pm
That’s not only very funny, it’s pretty clever. I doubt most people remember that perticuar episode of The Next Generation, and the flute only popped up directly, a couple of times, after that. Even the idea that he’d refer to Oliver as “Thomas” is totally in character. It’s really just amazing how much expression your chibi characters radiate. Picard’s annoyed, Link’s kinda “huh?” and Tommy’s obviously down.
February 23rd, 2010 at 3:21 pm
Ooh! Link, Picard, and Tommy playing the Inner Light together would be awesome…. course I have major crushes on Picard and Tommy…..
February 23rd, 2010 at 4:12 pm
But, the Dragon Dagger is a trumpet…
February 23rd, 2010 at 4:13 pm
Actually, Serath, it popped up as something of a background element more than a few times after that as one of Picard’s recreational activities instead of just reading a book (I remember one episode where he’s trying to practice for a concert and keeps getting interrupted literally every few seconds to the point where he’s about ready to space the crew to get them to leave him alone.
) Inner Light was one of my favorite episodes of the whole run, to be honest.
And…to whoever commented on the Dragonzord stomping on orphanages–good point, come to think of it..the dagger’s a *control system*, not a straight musical instrument. Link’s fortunate in that he can use the Ocarina as a normal instrument, and it’s only *special* songs that have effects.
Speaking of the Dragon Dagger–saw the toy that’s part of the ‘re-released MMPR’ toy line–silly thing has an extendable sword blade…that comes out of the *pommel* of the dagger–so apparently when you’re using it as a sword, you’re supposed to use the dagger blade as the grip?? D’oh!
February 23rd, 2010 at 4:36 pm
And then the Dragonzord came in and smashed the concert hall.
Tommy: THAT’S why my tempo was off, so THAT wouldn’t happen!!! Happy now?!?
Picard: Well, that’s a fair enough point.
Link: *nods* Hyah.
February 23rd, 2010 at 9:59 pm
A good follow-up to this would be Dr. Crusher, Sheik and Kimberly playing the harp/harp-like weapon.
February 23rd, 2010 at 10:10 pm
wow…three generation intertwined by the flute…
February 24th, 2010 at 12:31 am
Obviously his tempo is off, how can Tommy play a wind instrument through a helmet, in this case his faceplate?….TELL MEEE!!
February 24th, 2010 at 3:23 am
Good one! Little side note on Tommy, his original bio card printed on the original Dragonzord US release stated he was a bit of a loner who preferred to spend his time playing the flute.
Possible future idea, a poetry jam featuring Data, Skybyte, and another character who dabbles in poetry. (Yes, Data wrote poetry, I clearly remember “Ode to Spot”.
February 24th, 2010 at 4:31 am
@Master Maximus:
Felis catus is your taxonomic nomenclature,
An endothermic quadruped carnivorous by nature.
February 24th, 2010 at 9:41 am
What you don’t see is after the concert. Tommy get’s pissed at Picard because he wouldn’t leave him alone about the tempo and plays the Dragonzord Summoning out in the parking lot to crush Picard’s car. Picard can be seen in the background with a ‘WTF’ face while Link is standing next to him cowaring(sp?) in fear. Moral of this story? Don’t dis the original Green Ranger.

Can you technically speaking refer to someone who plays an Ocarina as a Flautist?
It is a wind instrument, but you don’t call Recorder, Obo, or other simular instrument players Flautists do you?

@Jarkes:
1: The talking sword thing was cool…
2: Why does no one ever assume that Link can talk…
February 24th, 2010 at 7:11 pm
Thomas!
Kai-chan, why woulod they be playing the theme from Sailor Moon? That was the theme tune you just mentioned, right?
Would be funny though.
February 25th, 2010 at 11:07 am
Matt, you get a pass on Picard’s uniform because you called yourself on it, and you quoted Data’s poem.
[hairsplitting] It actually more closely resembles the Academy uniform Nog wore on DS9. [/hairsplitting]
February 25th, 2010 at 3:43 pm
@Rhuen:
Well, they DID refer to an Ocarina as a Flute in the SNES version of A Link to the Past…
February 25th, 2010 at 5:10 pm
How the hell dose he play with the the helment on??
WTF
February 25th, 2010 at 7:57 pm
Wanna hear something truly funny and ironic? Today I was reading a Star Trek:TNG novel in which Picard talks about his flute playing.
February 25th, 2010 at 11:08 pm
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH TOMMY -glomps him and steals him away- i love this its amazing!!!!
February 26th, 2010 at 5:30 am
There’s controversy in the choice of flutist vs flautist. The latter is an homage to the italian word “flautista”, in italy flute is “flauto” and flute player is “flautista”. Being italian, I’d chose flautist of course ;D also because in italy “flute” is the glass used to drink champagne, and so “flutist” sounds a little like a not so sober musician :D:D:D
February 26th, 2010 at 8:05 am
MMPR Green Ranger from season 2, I see.
February 27th, 2010 at 2:35 am
@ Grim Rod: It was the song on my playlist. ^^;

I am Wreck-Gar! I remember when this comic was about Transformers!
February 27th, 2010 at 2:40 pm
@ Kai-chan: Brings back memories of when Jetix was Fox Kids. What on Earth’s a Jetix?
@ Wreck-Gar: Don’t we all. But comics like this makes the lack of Transformers from time to time bearable, no?
February 27th, 2010 at 7:11 pm
Oh man, this is just too dang funny! Poor Tommy. And with Picad being in his uniform…taking into consideration the Voyager stuff the uniform’s correct, though.
March 5th, 2010 at 5:21 am
What’s the music? -.-
